So we received our first invoice...

Received my first SANRAL paperwork on the 21st, some 4 days after the 30 day discount lapsed.

It's just funny how the 'Correspondence' for the VPC handover, the 'Account Statement' and the 'Copy Tax Invoice' have different issue dates on them, come in different envelopes and yet they all magically appear in your PO Box on the same day.

Either SAPO is really k@k at delivering mail, or somebody is very good at hiding when they actually mailed something.
VPC mail address is in Centurion, the envelope return address is in Roodepoort and I'm in Centurion. So where does this spam actually originate and why so long to travel a max of 50km?
I'll have to mail myself a letter from Centurion and Roodepoort to see how long it actually takes.

The envelopes have no date stamps on them, so it's easy for these tw@ts to say they mailed the stuff on time instead of leaving it till the last minute to ensure they have the maximum 'fear' impact on non-registered users.

Way to go idiots. Efficiency at its best... NOT!

P. S. Why no photos? Is my car that ugly, or are you just censoring my middle finger in the pics?

Remember, the post office union said they will delay SANRAL things by working slowly with such items. So that might be a cause...

Those of you that have received invoices for sizable amounts:

Do you plan on paying SANRAL or just ignoring them and hoping they go away.

To date I have received 2 invoices - with a combined total of about R1500.

I think that most people hope that SANRAL would eventually identify their mistakes.

I have a friend from Durban who has got final warnings for his vehicle of an amount in the thousands. This could just show all of the errors in the current system.

I would also love to know this. To date I have not paid.

I'm busy debating whether or not to pay SANRAL.

I think it is very easy for those that don't travel on the highways much, or even live in Gauteng, to be very loud about refusing to pay for tolls. This is however a different story when you are looking at a bill of ~R2k every month.

I don't exactly have the cash lying around to hire a lawyer should SANRAL decide to drag me to court...

Family's car (Peugeot) got written off around 3 years ago.

They received etollie bills from Sanral. Not sure what they gonna do...

I'm pretty sure this case will be thrown out of court should it ever go there...

You need to weigh up the risks here:

Bending to their bullying is an understandable response. They've really been on the bullying drive. BUT:
Will they take every non-payer to court?
Will the system survive if we don't pay?
Will all legal challenges fail?
Do you want to support phase 2 (involving far more than what this first phase cost)?

BUT once again - paying them is understandable. I advocate a no-pay stance, but I don't berate those who pay for legitimate reasons, or at least having applied some thought to the situation, which you have.

Bear in mind, the moment you pay, you bind yourself to their legal Ts and Cs, which are onerous. You effectively absolve them of all responsibilities for cock-ups and tie anything linked to your ID number to your account, and accept to pay it. Even cloned plates.

Tough choice. You know where I stand on this...

Whoa there tiger - sounds silly but you only agree to their T&Cs if you agree to their T&Cs, i.e. a definitive statement that you do. There is no tacit agreement that you do. It is quite possible to pay without any agreement on any T&Cs. You can't register without agreeing as it is one of their registration requirements, but not all payment methods require registration.

True, the online payment method ties you to their Ts and Cs. It's the only one I consider, as handing over credit card details over the phone just isn't viable. Nor is travelling to a kiosk to stand in queue and have your money rejected...

Dude - you can make an EFT payment to FNB Account no 62280209167 at branch code 25314500.

By some sheer random coincidence this is the same set of details I was thinking of using to help out some poor stranger who emailed me in desperation borne out of not knowing what to do with the bank deposit of someone sharing the same surname as me who died intestate.

Question:

The amount on display on the highway, is that the e-tag amount or the non e-tag amount?

Both, because there are two signs ;)

That doesn't sound right. One gantry on my invoice is R18.63, another R14,61.(without discount)
I never saw those amounts displayed on their Billboards/Displays.

They have a sign for the registered e-tag amount and a sign for the non registered e-tag/non e-tag amount, BUT the non e-tag signs amounts is for the pay-within-7-days discount amount.

So your invoice is now for the full alternative fee I think, without any discount, with the one gantries non registered e-tag/non e-tag but-paid-within 7-days fee being R3.726 and the other being R2.92 (gantries don't all have the same fee, based on the distance to the previous one).

Well, that explains it. Thanks. No photos came with the invoice and invoice arrived late, so I guess I'll take my chances and go to court.
