there is a local d2 server bitfarm u can use u don't have to use a virtual lan.
but yea virtual lan will work as well.

The Bitfarm server isn't overly busy, last night there were 2 open games running and no more than 8 people playing. I'll be in-game this evening from about 5pm (character = Killemandius)
If you go onto to the official Europe-ZAF server, you'll definitely find a dozen or more groups though. I just disliked the lag when it came to loot pickups, but overall gameplay is very smooth on our shaped 384k

I LOVED my rpgs such as dungeon siege, neverwinter nights and KOTOR - but somehow missed diablo.
Now the problem is, reading reviews all the time, diablo has become the benchmark of awesomeness when it comes to rating RPGs. I had a look at the game and unfortunately its too late for me now to appreciate it for what it is, seeing as I will judge the limited graphics when I play it - and i just dont want to spoil the "awesome concept" related to the game.
So do i play it or let it be an abstract reference ?

After playing dungeon siege II the graphix from diablo2 will really look out dated
The game play is still fun imo.
D2 really shined in the multiplayer arena, thus if you can convince a couple of your mates to join you for a weekend lan, or maybe if we can organize some MyBB members we can play it online and you will get the most out of it.

Done deal. My MF barb's lvl 33 now, working through Act5, but I have no issues with redoing earlier bits. That is, assuming you're on the Bitfarm server. I have chars on Europe-ZAF, but I'm enjoying the local server.

Finished Diablo1 a couple of weeks ago. Played as a Sorcerer... Diablo was way too easy to kill. 
Busy with D2 now. Playing as a Necromancer for the first time. Just started Act3.

i am a complete gaming noob due to NFT reasons
played D1 many moons back and it suited my limited attention span
what would be the easiest way to get hold of it (and then D2 thereafter i guess)?

Well.... *cough* you see.... my flatmate has got this unlimited cap at his work and he kinda sorta "aquired" the images for D1 and D2 this way.
I was going to buy the Battlechest..... honest...... but you can't get it here and it's expensive to import. And well, I didn't want to waste all the time and effort he went through to get it. You see my hands were tied.
But seriously, I have no idea where you can get D1. D2 and it's expansion are readily available at BT Games for less than R100 each.
No idee, does it also tell you that i can not connect to battlenet, and you should check your modem?

I just recently re-installed D2. Went nuts playing it a few years back. Got the girlfriend in on it too. We LAN nightly these days. Supper is getting prepaired later and later though =/ .
Yep, it was down for all of yesterday afternoon and evening, but was working fine again this morning.
Heh-heh, the screen-crack-addiction has definitely bitten again (thanks to the cool local players) - I was tempted to stay home and play D2 all day today! My new MF-barb and Hurricane-druid and Ice-Fire sorc and Pallie all need some levelling.
