Soaring spam exploits consumer fears

If you have a good spam filter like SpamBully or spam bayes, youshould be able to keep all that stuff out of your inbox no matter what.

These tools might keep some of the spam out of your inbox but they don't really solve the core problem. 90-95% of the mail in your mailbox is spam and that is a massive waste. It means that the cost of email services are between 10 and 20 times what they should be since you have to pay for bandwidth to receive all the spam and pay for storage for it in your mailbox.

I definitely don't get 9 spam for every 1 wanted email. I don't know how many emails my provider trash but I am happy with what I receive in my inbox.

I think the only way to completely kill spam is have no more free email address. Spammer use a address for a very short time. If they have to pay for that address it ill make a difference. I know this comment will get shot down in flaming glory, ( watch the next post )

Here's your flaming glory post :p

Some spammers do use free email addresses, sure, but they're in the minority.

Others set up their own servers on a bulletproof host (meaning the service won't be taken down easily) and they send out bots to harvest email addresses from bulletin boards such as myadsl. This is why you never put your email address up on bulletin boards, and if you have to, obfuscate it like my dot email dot address at home dot co dot za.

And people do buy things, spammers do make their money. If ppl can be educated on spam and what to do with it, the spammers won't make any money, and the spam will stop due to no funds on the spammer's part.

Recently an ISP was taken down for hosting a spamming outfit - but the spammers are undeterred, and is looking at hosting their servers in Russia, so take down won't be an issue for them, but for us it will be an issue as their servers will be more "bulletproof"...

ISP's (and the end user) in general do pay for that spam which passes on the network, whether we want it or not.

MWEB has an excellent spam filter, except I disable it. The problem with all spam filters is that inevitably they identify some genuine email as spam and that can be bad. I'd rather receive lots of spam than loose out on an important email, even one.

What we need is information on companies who buy address lists and then start an active campaign against them. Spray painting "This company uses spam mail" on their company building walls and vehicles. Doing similar to their products in stores and shops. Boycott them.
In South Africa we have a spammers Hall of Shame. I wouldn't suggest that you go and spray paint their offices as that could end you up in jail but you are welcome to boycott these companies if you feel strongly about it.

There was once in the early days of Usenet, a lawyer firm that spammed ALL the usenet groups with their company details, including faxes and phone numbers. They learnt not to do this. Cost them a fortune in burnt out fax machines and new phone numbers.

Daft. :D:D:D:D

That is if we really want to do anything about spam, except just moan about it.

Virtual pharmacies are really hard to target...
