Well, it should definitely be the aim of government to get more people into work and contributing tax, but what do you do with these 15 million people right now? Say that a welfare state is bad and take the money from them? You'll get a good few million basically dying of hunger and the rest in even more extreme poverty.

I think the least you can do is make them work for it in whatever meaningful way, except the truly disabled and pensioners. What to put them to work on that doesn't cost more money to create the jobs though?

People seem to forget that business tax makes up almost half of our tax revenue. Probably closer to 1:1.

Everyone pays VAT, so no there are not fewer tax payers than grant holders. As others have pointed out business say a lot of the tax, and what would you prefer to the grant system?

Untrue. Most basic necessities are zero rated for vat. And the informal economy doesn't pay vat anyway.

Would be worth working out the percentage of government spend that goes to grants, probably say 10%? So your now R400 provides for 1 person probably. But that's still worth whipping out in an argument, you keep one other person in SA alive through your daily grind!

A grant/welfare culture, or even system, is always undesirable. The story doesn't end there at all, it starts there. What are you going to do about it is the real problem. Currently most of those people desperately need the grants, but they should really get jobs.. what can you do about it?
