Heya Guys / Gals

Have any of you realised how people in this country are screwed because they're stuck with Socket 478 mobo's that got busted without any replacements being available.

Most of us are stuck with DDR 1 / Pentium HT enable chips and no motherboards to plug them into, also those pheripherals dont work on any of the new technologies out there.

Please post here if you have the same problem, or if you know where we can find these motherboards.

Eurobyte has a few socket 478 boards left.
They sent out a e-mail the other day saying they had some left

Yes I phoned them this morning; and they say that they are getting new stock next week or something. This is great news!

NOT HT Enabled Socket 478's

just some feedback - euroBYTE is very helpful and professional; however the boards that they sell does not support Intel Hyper Threading; its the slow stuff in other words. HyperThreading requires boards that have a Front Side Bus of 800mhz those dont.

Just FYI - AFter buying the board; euroBYTE did exchange it for something else; however they dont give you your money back, but I guess this is standard for any supplier.

Thanks

I still have a 478 in my server :(

My own PC is still a HT Enabled Socket 478 board (intel board) and still going strong. But the machine I am fixing however, is now short a new motherboard :(

I am considering advertising on Gumtree.co.za to see if anyone responds. But I am afraid of getting ripped off there; cause how do you test the goods before paying for it.

I have a Pentium4 2.8GHz with Hyperthreading in my server, not the best but good enough :)

INTEL RULEZ! woohoo

I have the same 2.8 with 1 gig ram; not good for the latest games, but for everything else, its still perfect.

We arent screwed anymore than any other country, products go end of life..

Nothing new here?

An upgrade cycle is every 3 years anyway, isnt it? Quite a few places offer 3 year warranty on their products, Intel boards carry a 3 year warranty and if you have a decent supplier you won't have any problem getting a faulty board replaced.

3 years because it suits the manufacturers not the users!

You cant support a product forever, the manufacturers are 100% right.

Do you still expect them to be manufacturing Pentium 1 boards?

It would be a waste of resources, just like manufacturing socket 478 boards would be.

Nobody said forever, but within reason; those boards still work don't they? P1's will work for Linux I guess, but the point is; within reason. They terminate and move on, because they know --- people need to buy a new one;

Have you ever heard of the Wastemakers? Its a book about companies that create goods to expire within a certain timeperiod so that they can keep their businesses going. They never really considered the consumer.

Exactly - within reason... Socket 478 was launched when? 2001?

We're in 2007 now.. and chips used on socket 478 are more than 2 generations old..

It costs manufacturers money to manufacture these boards that no one is going to buy, and it costs local suppliers money to hold this stock incase someone somewhere out there might decide he needs 1..

Might make sense for a small supplier but not the large ones who sell current technology..

You can buy a new s775 motherboard and cpu for less than a R1000. And to be honest a R1000 is nothing. Especially not after i paid a R145 for 2 cokes and a beer in england

Interestingly enough, I can still buy a water pump for a 1982 Peugeot Station Wagon at a guarage in Pretoria; it seems that someone there interpreted the market instead of trying to forge it for their own gain.

They got to you too; that's why you think like you do!

ha-ha
