Does anyone know of any software to get a laptop to behave like a hardware landline phone. I want to plug the cable from Telkom into the modem socket, and connect my headset and receive and place calls. There are lots of soft phones around, but they all seem to support VOIP/SIP only. Many of my calls are to 0800 numbers and I don't want to use my ADSL cap for them.

Windows XP has a thing called the Windows Dialer which allows you to dial, but you can't answer the call.

Any ideas?

Softphone for modem...

Had a Sony laptop around 1999 / 2000 with this exact software for Win98. I loved it!
Just plug into a POTS analog phone line and use my laptop like a phone: had answering machine, call recorder.
I figured this would be standard on most laptops??? But I've never seen it anywhere since.

I've been looking for just this thing and haven't found it anywhere yet. I'll post here if I do find.
Why not have a software phone that uses the modem port and works just like a real physical phone.
All softphone apps I can find do SIP and all kinds of fancy VoIP stuff - but don't to plain analog phone via a modem port. Why?
