Software Developer vs Chartered Accountant

There will always be exceptions to the rules but qualified CA's on average far out earn the average developer. What skews that is the fact that many developers do not have a degree where a CA has to have one as well as articles. I suspect of you compared salaries of CA's with salaries of Engineers working as developers (so similar level of education) the salaries would be very similar. I know its not always fair but in SA salaries are very skewed towards people with the degree.

He was originally a developer here, moved over to the US so he works there now as a senior developer. If you convert from $ to ZAR he clears about R90k a month. I know he also has stock options and they gave him a Nexus 5x as a Christmas present in 2015.

Ah, ok. US salary. That's pretty typical for the valley. He probably gets another ~90k per month in stocks and cash bonuses when averaged per month.
