Software piracy exposed

Let's examine the strategy of the Bulls**t Alliance, aka Microsoft's Goons.

They let you pirate their software. Every couple of months they release an ad campaign to scare companies into 'coming clean', i.e. shelling out large sums of money to buy legitimate copies of M$ software.

What the foss movement needs to do is to counter this misinformation so that companies that use a lot of pirated M$ stuff are aware that they can run their operations for free.

A guy I know, when asked by the BSA whether they had paid for software licences for sofware used in their school, said "no". The next day the goons were there with warrants. He was openly mocking them while they found only foss software (not that they were able to operat the machines with "strange operating systems" LOL. The guy was spitting angry, cause he was rubbing his hands thinking about the juicy commission that just flew out the window....

Yeah, won't that be a scene. "Opensource programmers arrested for pirating M$ code" :D

Don't joke, the new weapon against open source is this overly stupid patent idea. Problem is already affecting Linux with Codecs (mp3 and dvd). You'll notice that linux distros don't come with them pre-installed.

Sony owns the patent to how to decrypt blu-ray, so anyone who makes a blu-ray movie player will be illegally doing so and be shut down. Affectively killing off the open source alternatives.

If OpenOffice manages to open anything that is patent by MS Office then they'll be nailed for reverse engineering, copy infringement and owe royalties to MS. So yes, "Opensource programmers arrested for pirating M$ code" is something to be aware of.

Just pointing out the sad life of a non-open-source programmer. Who hasn't noticed that a fresh install of Linux can't play <most> media. Stupid money-making companies tend to force licensing upon it all.

Another Important Point being overlooked

Brilliant article. I agree.
They are just greedy bastards like Microsnot.

I have been doing on-site IT support for years and have come across
the fair amount of companies who dont have legal software.

What they fail to mention is how many job opportunities are created.
Job creation for 2 or 3 people to me at least outweighs one pirated copy of windows.
I know of many small companies who struggle to make ends meet and
I would also rarther pay a staff members salary than spend it on windows.

Some companies still use 98 believe it or not.

What bothers me most is that Microsnot cant even sort out one software package, and when I say sort out, I mean that everything that they say it does, works. Every month new updates come out for XP, and millions of issues are still unresolved.

Will you buy a house, a car, ANYTHING else with so many problems with it?

Why should we have to pay so much for UNFINISHED software, cos that's what it is UNFINISHED.

Now they are pushing Vista and stopping sales of XP end of this year, let me tell you THEN you are going to see piracy. Vista is such a pain in the ass on networks, I cannot suggest it to clients. You explain to a managing director of a company, that its Vista's fault that he cant send an e-mail, cos even though all the settings are correct no one can seem to connect.

I would like to know how many hours of productivity has been lost with Vista alone.

Now I am going to be forced to install pirated software, because my clients insist on XP, and I agree with them.

I cannot remember struggling this much when switching to XP, from 98.
It was wonderful.

Vista is like a nice sexy looking hot secretary, that sits there and looks pretty, and not very efficient.

XP is the experienced ugly secretary that slaps you when you talk to her slightly rude, but she is solid as a rock, reliable and never misses a days work.

That's my kind of software.

No need to pirate the XP if you dont want your cleint in trouble. Vista Business edition (I think thats what its called) has a XP downgrade license included. I always sold my PCs with a legal XP included for businesses.

Anyway, I love XP too, dont see anything it lacks compared to Vista.

Great article!!

one of the best things to come out of piracy was the selling of mp3's on the internet- in the past you were forced to buy a cd that contained 8 rubbish songs for R150 to get like 3 good ones- mp3 piracy happened and the record companies were forced to respond and allow their songs to be sold individually on the internet- now you can get just the tracks you want.

also I was looking at buying a 3d package- I look at maya- $5000- thats a little less than R40 000!!!!! cmon!!!! hopefully if more people pirate, these companies will be forced to down their prices

I know about that, I was actually referring to the Laptop Manufacturers who don't supply drivers to their new laptops.

Now that's a pain in the ass.
