It's so crap it always fails and says the download is corrupt, I'm trying to update a whole bunch of stuff and it would be so convenient if Software Update actually worked!

Lemme guess - mweb.

AFAIK akami's servers are on IS so you can probably figure out what's happening. :o

Download them manually. Way more reliable from my experience.
Well I've also had Software Update fail, When I tried to download the updates manually - the same thing happens sometimes. Your download gets paused. If you resume it a few times, sometimes it becomes corrupted. So you have to redownload ... It's the ADSL! It's merely an annoyance if you have uncapped though.

Ah I worked out the problem I think, it was the iWork update. It tried to download that one first and failed all the time and then it didn't download the rest.

I unticked the iWork update and everything worked fine, downloading the iWork update manually now.

When your network disconnects while Software Update is running, you can launch software update again and it continues where it last stop.

PS. i'm actually not sure if it only works if you haven't quit Software Update.

PPS. Apple needed to fix Software Update and i think the Mac App Store is their answer.

Software update isnt broken - our network is.

Particularly for people who are mweb subscribers there is currently still no local peering with Telkom (verified my downloads originate there) which means data has a long way to travel. Guess what - same thing goes for all of Apples downloads including direct downloads from Apples site and App Store downloads.

Apple can't be expected to sort out SA's peering.

I have absolutely no problem with "Software Update" even at home on my Mweb 4mb uncapped

I don't think peering has much effect on speed.

As I recall, some apple stores will allow you to update in-store. One even offered to put stuff on a disk.

If mweb routes their traffic overseas first then back into SA it might.

I think the reason is either because they don't have proper resume support, or their download sessions don't last long enough. ( I intensely dislike websites like this, in SA we need proper resume support on all files)

Regardless, I can normally run the auto update no problem over mtn or the new Cell C, but with voda it also bombs out every time.

Software update has always been fine on my ADSL, BUT I have found a culprit if it does fail: Firewalls.

When updating my iPhone/iPod/iTunes on Windows I need to switch off my Kaspersky or it fails. Enabling it as a safe program doesn’t help either.

I would always advise using a decent segmented download manager with resume support and sites that support resume for most bigger files. It's also handy having your updates saved so you can access them at a later stage should the situation arrive without resorting to timely downloads.

Exactly... although I have never used a download manager that didn't have resume support....
I didn't know that the mac updates could be downloaded manually, although it seems it could use more bandwidth, this could be the way to go if it keeps on needing to be re-installed the whole time. I guess i was skeptical of mac "never needing to be re-installed" for a good reason, it's just another computer...

But sites like blackberry don't seem to have proper resume support, or maybe their sessions only last a few minutes.
