Well I've also had Software Update fail, When I tried to download the updates manually - the same thing happens sometimes. Your download gets paused. If you resume it a few times, sometimes it becomes corrupted. So you have to redownload ... It's the ADSL! It's merely an annoyance if you have uncapped though.Download them manually. Way more reliable from my experience.
Software update isnt broken - our network is.PPS. Apple needed to fix Software Update and i think the Mac App Store is their answer.

Particularly for people who are mweb subscribers there is currently still no local peering with Telkom (verified my downloads originate there) which means data has a long way to travel. Guess what - same thing goes for all of Apples downloads including direct downloads from Apples site and App Store downloads.
Apple can't be expected to sort out SA's peering.
If mweb routes their traffic overseas first then back into SA it might.I don't think peering has much effect on speed.
As I recall, some apple stores will allow you to update in-store. One even offered to put stuff on a disk.
I think the reason is either because they don't have proper resume support, or their download sessions don't last long enough. ( I intensely dislike websites like this, in SA we need proper resume support on all files)
I would always advise using a decent segmented download manager with resume support and sites that support resume for most bigger files. It's also handy having your updates saved so you can access them at a later stage should the situation arrive without resorting to timely downloads.
