Solar storms potentially affecting communications

Interesting read. Thanks!
BTW... is it just me, humans 'think' that we are can control of the universe?

“solar weather” which satellites are designed and built to withstand."

We all see how well that worked for Japan

Geez i cannot believe hot it is in jhb today, at 8 o clock i woke up sweating .

Radiation is perhaps causing this extra heat :p. Nasa thinks there could be a massive storm towards the end of 2012. Mega storm.

It's not really big news is it? I mean NASA said a few years back that this year would see huge solar storms/flares that could have catastrophic consequences if the right precautions weren't put into place. So long as the warning was heeded (and I doubt many people would ignore it), then there is no real reason to worry.

Not control. If we didn't build structures to attempt to protect us from the environment and infrastructure as well as possible to survive the forces of nature we'd all still be living in caves and hunting with pointed sticks, with lifespans of 30 years if we were exceedingly lucky.

You mean the nuclear power stations that stood up to forces well beyond what they had been designed for?

Anyone notice DSTV loose signal last night for about a minute? Not sure if it has anything to do with this.

Once again, another good example of the media over reacting to the public...

+1 for article,

I wonder if Blackberry BIS was affected. It was very bad yesterday

Unfortunately, not even RIM could get away with that excuse. The problem is that BIS sucks, particuarly in South Africa, where the mobile operators seem to feed it from Timbuktu or some such hub of the Internet over broken cables. Have you considered complaining to your network operator that they should tell RIM to provide real Internet in South Africa from a proper source? Of course, you could just kick the Blackberry habit, and you'd be a lot happier.
