Solid state drive growth and pricing

R17 000 is WAAAY too expensive. Who'd buy that at that price I don't know. But it's definately a step in the right direction.

People will pay, ssd's are awesome.

SSD's are the future but for now they remain expensive which is rather sad because if they could produce an 80 gb ssd for let's say 600-800 bucks they would sell millions.

How long does a SSD last? I've had problems with a few flashdisk that after a time of using the drive all the data just dissapear.

Are there methods for data recovery available, like there are for mechanical drives?

In a professional high end computing environment (video editing for example) where drive speed is everything, people would definitely pay that.

by the time the prices are low enough, there will likely be a new technology completely? I really think SSD's are more of an expensive/elitist 'filler'-product, similar to the likes of OLED - reaaaally great technology that I'd love, but ridiculously overpriced and relatively short-lived / inevitably replaced with something better before the price drops

SSD's vs USB flash drives uses wear leveling algorithms.

Been using my Samsung 64 GB SSD for almost 18 months now with no problems. In use 12+ hours a day and I regularly copy and delete large files. It's my primary drive with Windows XP and all my applications installed on it. Pair it with a hard drive for data.

Just had a quick look at the Frontosa price list and a 64 GB Corsair is around R3000 incl VAT retail. 170 MB/s read and 100 MB/s write.

Next time your PC slows down, note the hard drive LED is flashing away ... imagine that bottleneck gone ...

Highly recommended.

R17000 is just a bit much over the price tag for me..just a little. ;)

^R3200 for 128Gb's is ridiculous imo, I'll wait for longer for lower prices.

The great thing about SSD's for me are that they're completely silent (and of course, cool). Perfect for an HTPC , except the price :(
Now that we have one TB drive on the market, let's hope competition kicks in fast and drives those prices down to reasonable levels sooner than in 5yrs.

There are known issues with 'wear leveling' algorithms. The thing works in theory on SSDs with lots of free space but once you go down to little available space you end up having to rewrite the same sectors over and over again plus you can't erase and overwrite SSDs as easily as magnetic HDDs.
