Hi guys,

This thread is from 7 years ago and things have changed quite a bit so I am posting this update.
Local ISP's has changed routing quite a bit and Blizzard has changed WOW networking a bunch also.

Atm you if you have a good quality line, are in a decent area and use a decent ISP then your ping should really be perfectly fine.
Yes Wow remains a game that is sensitive to interference so make sure your LA & SNR values are good, you have no packet loss or issues on hops.
What do I consider fine for Wow?
Stable 220ms or below. (Atm I am getting 175-180ms stable, and by stable I mean no spikes)

Things like Battleping (most used these days) should not changed things much, but there is the possibility that it can give you a more stable and slightly better ping if it improves on the routing your ISP takes.
It will however not solve line issues or congestion in your area.

Best of luck. Feel free to leave a reply.

OLD POST
==========

There always been allot of questions and problems about pings and DC's in 25 mans when playing from SA. I've raided seriously allot, althou I've been retired for a while I've had my HM drakes, Starcaller title etc for a while now and I've also had the LAG & DC problems in Naxx 25, in Ulduar 25 on boss fights, latency spikes and just **** latency in general.

Being a serious raider I had to fix it and I did spend allot of time to get to the bottom of things. (I use Windows XP SP2)

* 1stly with your ADSL line the Line Attenuation (the lower the better!) & Noise Margin (the higher the better) is VERY important. Make sure yours are good! You can google it, these forums has other topics about it also. (added: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=46156)
Make sure you have filters on the telephones on the line and unplug Fax machines if you can, they add allot of Noise etc.
Report an Intermitted Fault to Telkom so they can test and maybe fix your line a bit. (they can quickly do a port reset while u are on the phone with them also)
Its a fact that these to little things on your line WILL cause you lag & DC's!

I cannot begin to tell you how important a good Line Attenuation & Noise Margin is!!! You want Line Att under 40 & Noise Margin above 13 and u will def be sorted.

* ADSL accts.
- Normal telkom Based accts are ****, never use them
- Unshaped telkom based accts are OP, I used to use an Axxess Prepaid Unshaped Saix based acct
- Before I 'retired' Semi shaped or 626 (I also used Axxess) started to work fine (this was after the seacom things)
626 accts are cheap and they work most of the time, if there where problem times I always had an 1GB unshaped prepaid to help me out

* BUT most importantly I made use of Lowerping (www.lowerping.com) service (tried all others like gamemax.org and they did not work properly, have not tried http://www.gamepath.net/ , but I know they are a bit cheaper) With lowerping (putty & sockscapv2 on Xp) I get +- 250ms pings with an Saix Unshaped acct and +-290MS with Semi-shaped / 626 accts (seemed these IS based accts was 'fixed' after seacom)

* You can also change the TcpAckFrequency of windows. It might or might not work for you, so give it a shot if you want. I will paste crap about it @ the bottom of this post.

* Another thing that I found on the WOW forums and google is to change some settings on your Network card itself. (properties on your Lan/network card connection) I don't have what to change with me now sorry.
It was also mentioned to delete your network card from device manager, restart pc and let it reinstall or reinstall it. Sometimes some sortware etc changes things and a fresh 'restart' of it might help.

I did all the above things and I was raiding seriously Naxx & Ulduar for some time without a single latency related DC using the above things. My ping was always between 200 - 250ms except when there where SA network problems (**** happens hey)

I really hope this helps some of you guys who are still having problems. It worked for me.

*Note* I reinstalled my Windows XP SP2 (this XP) yesterday 09 Oct, did the TcpAck fix, loadeded Lowerping with SocksCapV2, logged on wow and there I was standing in dalaran with my 80fps looking @ the green connection computer saying 279ms while connected with my Afrihost acct. I was flying around, casing heals etc and latency stayed that why. Tonight I will test it in the raids.

TcpAckFrequency - Not saying it will work for you, but you can try it

Look @ the following addon: http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info13581-LeatrixLatencyFix.html (updated for Win7) Thx to Pornolio for info/link - This is what I use

WoW lags, it's not something new if you're playing on servers a bit far away from your country, but don't worry people are fixing it ! Out of all the methods offered to fix the lag on your machine, one of them posted on Elitistjerks forums seems to work very well.

<> <> <> Read this first <> <> <>
1 - It might have side effects, like slowing down your download speed or affecting your performance on other softwares. (In my case, it didn't change anything)
2 - If you're not sure about what you're doing, just don't do it. I don't want to be responsible because you crashed your computer in some way because you wasted your registry.
2.1 - Seriously, if you don't know what you're doing, don't do it. It will be fixed in one or two weeks anyway. (and the official fix won't have any impact on other softwares)
3 - If you don't have the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSMQ\ directory, you can download and apply this file to your registry.
4 - Windows Vista users might want to check this post too.

"1 - TcpAckFrequency - NOTE if you are running Windows Vista this setting may not have any effect - a hotfix is needed which i'm tracking down. This works fine under Windows XP

Type "regedit" in windows "run.." dialog to bring up registry menu

Then find:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\

There will be multiple NIC interfaces listed in there, find the one you use to connect to the internet, there will be several interfaces listed (they have long names like {7DBA6DCA-FFE8-4002-A28F-4D2B57AE8383}. Click each one, the right one will have lots of settings in it and you will see your machines IP address listed there somewhere. Right-click in the right hand pane and add a new DWORD value, name it TcpAckFrequency, then right click the entry and click Modify and assign a value of 1.

You can change it back to 2 (default) at a later stage if it affects your other TCP application performance. it tells windows how many TCP packets to wait before sending ACK. if the value is 1, windows will send ACK every time it receives a TCP package.

Having latency issues on Windows 7 RC? Try this:

1. Go in under Control Panel / Network and Internet / Network connections.
2. Right click your internet connection and choose Properties.
3. Under your network device at the top, click Configure...
4. Under advanced, disable everything that ends with "Checksum Offload".
5. Profit. :)

Edit: Note that this workaround is only tested under Windows 7 RC

FPS Related:
------------

There are two graphics settings that are an absolute killer for fps. Once is reduce lag input or some such thing and the other is the shadow setting. Move it one tick below max and it makes a massive difference. Full shadow atm is a pc killer.

*edit 20/04/10* Hi all, Its been a while since anything has been added here. Personally I have not had any real DC's for ages, but I received a pm from delta_brad who said he was still having DC's in 25 man raids.

"I came across this very handy addon that blocks other addon spam. Sorted my DC problems in 25mans right away. The only downside is that the addon ignores players with addons that spam and then unignores them when the fight is over"

Does the tcpack fix/nagle hack work for win 7? Anyone know?

yes the script that I use to change the settings for me rais it works in win7

@ SnowWar : Did you play on EU or USA servers?

Most of us play on EU servers, and I find it difficult to believe that using the unshaped connection to get to LowerPing in the USA, and being routed from the USA to Europe is the way to go.

EDIT: Nevermind, Lowerping provide both EU and USA services. I would still like to know which one you were using though. :o

I mostly connected through Lowerping London 1 server (playing on EU Sylvanas) thou I did use Paris etc from time to time.
(I've even used London 1 on Aion and have a +- 250ms ping there also)

As I said Unshaped Saix was by far more stable (I'm taking a break from wow atm) I always had a +- 250ms stable ping in Ulduar 25 etc, no spikes and dc's.

I dont know how IS based Semi-shaped or 626 perform atm - maybe some1 can test it? (was wondering with the new afrihost offer)

I used 626/semi-shaped accts when I was doing all other things except 25 mans, but the last while before I stopped playing I was using the 626 acct with lowerping to raid my u25 hard modes also without problems. It was just some odd days that the 626 ping went up, in which case I'd just switch to my unshaped. This was a few weeks after Seacom.

I'll probly get back into wow later the month and test things myself again. RL & work > wow atm :)

There is another solution. Extreme, but incredibly effective. Emigrate :D

I am on a 4meg line and Telkom shaped account and applied the leatrix fix and did a 25 man Ony and my latency on US was about 500ish and jumped to about 600 when the whelps came out but NO DC's whatsoever thank you so very much for the post pointing this out, oh and stopped using dbm changed to Bigwigs. In Dalaran i am getting about 450 lat :D

I've been playing since this afternoon and am getting regular dc's from wow, latency is fine, this is all regular areas no instances.
