I've read quite a few articles on the SEACOM cable, but have yet to find the answers to the following questions, please help, thanks...

1.) When the SEACOM cable gets installed. Will my Telkom ADSL 4meg line be able to download and upload at quicker speeds?

2.) Will my ping to overseas servers be quicker?

3.) If SEACOM doesn't affect Telkom ADSL at all, will I need to get a NEOTEL solution to take advantage of what SEACOM offers? If so how in speed will the NEOTEL solution compare to Telkoms 4 meg ADSL with regard to download speeds and ping times?

Thanks

Is this the gregquinn who used to work for Online Productions ????

Any how from my understanding Seacom is a bandwidth re - seller that means that there is no monopally on the line so any of the ISP's can purchase bandwidth from them. The more ISP's buying into this the better speeds we can expect all round.

There are anouther 2 cables landing after this year and only then will we truelly be on the Broadband Wagon :)

From my understanding, telkom has not bought any bandwidth on seacom so there should technically be no change to anything for telkom customers.

A side effect however may be that ISP's migrates from SAT-3/SAFE to Seacom and thus reduce the traffic on that cable, so it is possible that you may see a reduction. But then again, many ISP's are still keeping bandwisth on SAT-3/SAFE as redundancy so the traffic may not reduce that much if at all.

Secondly, Neotel is a wireless network and as such, latencies will always be slower than ADSL which is a fixed line solution. You would only be able to compare between an ISP similar to Neotel.

From the SEACOM interview on Telcotalk (CNBC).

1. Quicker but not as fast as hyped.

2. Depends on routing (changeable).

3. Don’t know.
