Firstly let me say, wondeful response to the recent price reductions Vodacom. Finally we are seeing proper competition.

Now, seeing as Vodacom has some incredibly sexy options, im seriously considering moving over to them (and I was gonna sign an MTN contract this week, just as well I was lazy and waited). A few questions however.

1) Can I buy the modem in cash (the E220 one), if so will any cell shop sell them and anyone know a guestimated price?

2) Where can I see if I will have the HSDPA covereage in the area I will be living in, in about a months time. I know MTN has the coverage, no idea on vodacom. *EDIT* Okay I found the street Im in, but theres a gap of covereage very close to where I am going to be, Is there anyone one can "test" the coverage?

3) What is the latency like on the vodacom network, Is it possible to play games over this connection? What sort of latency can one expect to the local servers and the international ones? Im not expecting it to be better than adsl, but is it manageable?

4) What about the possibilty (if it doesn't already exist) of buying "add-ons" for your contract. EG: Say I have the 2gig option. and I hit the 2 gigs and have 1 week to go in the month. Can I buy another 500Mb (just for that month) or is the out of bundle data rates cheap enough not to worry? Just thinking along the lines of what I currently do for adsl.

5) As far as I see Vodacom will not ever be differentiation on the type of traffic that is being used (So skype, email, p2p, http, ftp, games will be charged exactly the same rates)?

AFAIK E220's are about R2500 cash, and you can load multiple bundles per month, which would be better than paying R2/MB!

1 - Pricing is available from the retail stores. Call around for specials.

2 - On the coverage map on vodacom.co.za

3 - probably lower than adsl. Maybe other gamers can respond?

4 - Yes, called ad-hoc bundles.

5 - Yes, current policy is not to charge differently.

If my calculation is right, the difference between the Bolt-on My Gig 2 for R389.00 without USB Modem and the My Gig 2 R449.00 Contract with USB Modem, the modem work out to R1440.00.

Yesterday I walked into Vodashop in Cresta and they've quoted me for the USB Modem R3150.00 cash. The shop opposite quote me R2775.00 cash.

Why is there such a big difference between the Franchises?. If so where can one buy the USB Modem at more affordable price?.

I did contact Vodafone Direct and left my number, because they were too busy to take my call and I'm still waiting for them to phone me back.

Also the Contract with USB Modem, is it for 24 months?

Any advice where or who to contact for modem prices?

There are various retails store run as independent businesses, so best to phone around.

It's a 24 month contract.

Thanks for the replies,

Okay a few points to clarify, the ad-hoc bundles, the R189 for the 500Mb prices Vodacom now has can be bought at any time? So I could say buy one 500mb bundle on the 1st then get another say on the 20th if I wanted (yes I know its cheaper to buy one 1gig bundle :P). How does one buy these bundles (if im on the 4U contract)?

I'd rather try get the modem seperately (purely because I VERY much like the idea of the R0pm 4U contract with add on bundles of as much as I want in a month, and being able to spend R0 in the month if I have to)

Edinetz - The sub 100ms ping is pretty darn good for wireless. My ADSL used to be around 60-120ms pings (until telkom fixed it, now I get 40-80ms pings). Do you find it playable with those latencies?

Sorry for all these questions here, but Im very very scpetical of the celluar shops (I haven't tested vodacoms service yet so not commenting on them) but the level of incompetence I have delt with with the CellC and MTN guys just scares me, I'd rather get my facts straight before heading off to deal with them.

Borrow someone's 3G phone and go to the exact spot you will be using HSDPA. Check the signal. If the phone shows GPRS and not 3G, you will need to borrow a laptop with datacard on a 3G only profile to prevent the automatic switching to the stronger GPRS signal. Or borrow a phone that can do 3G only.

Then again if the signal is borderline, you will probably need to install an external antenna to ensure a good signal. A weak signal will mean slower speed on HSDPA.

EDIT: A friend of mine got a good deal at Cellucity - Data messenger plus: Pay R80 per month x 24 and get 40 MB per month "free". There was also an upfront payment of R239 for the card. So R80x24 + R239=R2159 for the card effectively, but you get 960 MB included over 24 months. Not a bad deal if you don't want to fork out +- R3000 cash for the card. Plus all sms on this contract costs about 23 c each peak or off peak.

3G/HSDPA (data card / USB modem)

Could someone assist me please with these questions?

a ) With recent price reduction, what is the latest on the price of the 3G/HSDPA data card or USB modem?

b) Are these interchangeable yet for MTN and Vodacom--or am I locked into the network after my purchase?

I'd like to purchase and then go month-to-month--and go where the deal is the best. Is this even possible? :(

a) no change in the pricing of the modems

b) modems not locked to the Vodacom network

c) chopping & changing would mean you would pay prepaid or out of bundle rates, not wise...
