Hi all,

Got quite a strange problem.

Running Ubuntu 9.04 on a laptop that connects to iBurst over PPPoE using the UTD.

For some reason a few websites will not load. So far the only two I know of are dailymail.co.uk and huffingtonpost.com (I haven't tested extensively). It resolves the domains fine, but just sits loading a blank page forever.

I've tried both FireFox and Chromium, same result.

If I connect via PPPoE to ADSL they work fine. If I connect over WiFi to ADSL they work fine. If I connect to the same iBurst account with same UTD over PPPoE on a Vista machine the sites work fine.

Any idea as to what the problem could be?

Tried to fix the problem by upgrading to 9.10 but it does not boot on the machine ATM (seems to be buggy acpi or something).

Thanks!

Richard :)

*bump*

anyone?

Reloading the page doesn't help. it's so weird that it only happens over iburst and not ADSL (which are both setup as normal PPPoE connections)!!?

Odd. Both work for me from openSUSE. Checked your DNS and other settings?

Digging a little, I've notice that TOR connections time out now. Perhaps one of the consequences of the move to the new data centre and one that will hopefully be resolved soon.

Gratz on reading the Huff :D

Have you tried manually putting in the Iburst DNS servers? This is a strange problem.

Please try manual DNS settings.

This morning there are no DNS issues.

Set your MTU on the ppp connection to 1392

ifconfig ppp0 mtu 1392

That is normally the reason you have problems like that

Awesome thanks for the advice.

Will try the manual DNS and the MTU settings and report back.

Thanks again, really appreciate it :)

I am also having problems with Iburst now with some sites not loading.

This is the msg I am getting:-

Connection Failure
The requested URL could not be retrieved

Iburst website not loading

I have similar problems contacted iburst about it and never got a response. I play some Farming game www.freefarmgame.co.uk and you can play on 4 servers and everything works fine except the french server it loads the page and when you log in the page just gets reloaded. Switch to 3g on same computer and the sites loads fine also switching to telkom and the site loads fine. So unfortunately for them to test this they need to create an account at www.freefarmgame.fr and try to log in, but I reckon thats too much to ask.

I reckon there's a lot of website we won't be able to access we just don't know it yet because we haven't found or went to them yet and I have to add Telkom has the same issues certain pages just don't load and it normally some international website.

maybe one day someone would be able to tell me why I can't connect to the game via iburst, but again I reckon by that time I would have already switched ISP's

Set your MTU on the ppp connection to 1392

ifconfig ppp0 mtu 1392

That is normally the reason you have problems like that

That solved it! Thanks so much for the help! :D

In case this helps someone:
It took me a few hours of googling and trying different things to get the MTU set to 1392 permanently.

Setting it for the connection under "Wired Settings" in Network Manager did NOT change it!

In the end, the instructions in this post worked. The MTU for ppp0 is now always set to 1392.
