Someone gave xrapidx a 40D

I must confess, I have *never* used P. I have no idea what it does. I use AV. And when that doesn't cut it, I fall back on M. Old habits die hard...

sorry about the ugly pics, but this was the only time I had the 450d + 18-55IS for checking out (ugly day)
anyway, you should be able to gauge the sharpness of this combo
the first one is at 55mm f7.1
the second one is at 18mm f4

Except for a noticeable lack of barrel distortion I dont notice a discernible difference to the non IS version.

D90? You can't be serious. The 40D and D90 are very similar. If you have a 40D, why are you even thinking about that? In terms of image quality, those 3 cameras are all the same. You already have an 18-55 Canon lens.
The Nikon d90 is more comparable with the Canon 450d.
The Canon 40d is more comparable with the Nikon d300.

The Nikon d90 is more comparable with the Canon 450d.
The Canon 40d is more comparable with the Nikon d300.

you've used them both, or did you look it up on pdreview?
the d90 is the d300 in a plastic body, but without the high frame rate
the d90 has the same exposure meter, same screen, same hardware (except for fps) & slightly improved firmware (you can now call up functions more easily, which is a real world deference)
40d has better ergonomics than d90
d90 has better ergonomics than 450d

40d is faster than d90 & has a better body (awesome design)
if I wanted a fast & rugged cam I would have gone for the 40d

the raw files from the 40d and d90 look the same, but I can get the ready-to-use jpegs, out the d90, a lot quicker

SACamera:
Canon 450D Body: R8,099.00 (it's competition is the D60)
Nikon D90 Body: R13,899.00
Canon 40D Body : R11,799.00

(exposure meter did not get tripped up)
  • program mode
  • active d-lighting: auto (it makes sure highlights don't look funny & sets the contrast and brightness for me)
  • +/-EV: 0
  • auto WB (A3 warming filter {not a real one :p})
  • auto ISO
  • picture profiles: my custom one for objects
this is where the func button comes in
it can be set to call up the first item in "my menu" (real world improvement over d300)
my first item is "picture profiles"
this was a colourful object, so I set it to my custom profile for "things"
if I was shooting a person, I would set it to standard

that is why I like the D90
I almost went for the 40d - it's just a personal thing
I felt that the 40d's body was so nice, that it was a same I was getting the d90
in the end, it came down to the functionality that I wanted
oh yeah, the speed on the 40d is ****ing awesome too - you must hear it go
da dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada dada da!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Well - it looks like I sold my 450D :)

The 40D is still unopened - so now I must decide if I want to sell it as new and move to Nikon, or get a lens.

A collegue had the D200 about to weeks ago, I was really impressed with the pictures.

Don't listen to ldmelsa, give the 40D to me :p

Egronomics is subjective. For someone with small hands, the 40D has very bad egronomics.

Nothing wrong with the 40D's jpegs.

I would consider a D300 over the 40D, but not a D200.

don't get a nikon
you already have a 40d
get some glass

+1

I have small hands, does this mean the 40D is gonna be a problem? :(
I can't handle them cos the stores are out of stock, but they order upon the user ordering.

I'll check at Canal Walk tonight - want to go look at lenses :p and the 50D :D

You've been holding off on buying a camera waiting for something you've never even held, let alone tested?

BTW - they're not scarce around here - even my local Macro has stock.

I'm not concerned about the testing, I know it's a good cam. I haven't held it. Makro here doesn't have stock and neither does orms.co.za nor sacamera.co.za

Depends on your hands...

If you can't find a 40D somewhere to try (I'd be surprised), it's body is identical to the 50D, 99% the same as the 30D and very similar (but better than) the 5D

if you want the new screen
I've never used a 50d, so can't comment

look here:
http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Canon_EOS_50D/outdoor_results.shtml
So . . . shooting RAW "reveals cleaner and better defined details with a slight boost in resolution" than JPG? :)
Aside from the screen that looks better, the 50D is identical. The body is the same, the button placement is the same. The only difference is that the print button now has another function.

EDIT: The above relates to the body shape & layout, not the internals.
Dang I wish I could program that button.
