Someone gave xrapidx a 40D

Big hands - find the current 450D a bit small. :)

I'll see if I can find a 50D tonight somehwere... otherwise I'll open the 40D/...

Big hands here too - but the only time I wish my camera was bigger was when I have that massive flash sitting atop the rest of the time I'm happy to lug around the smaller body. A larger body is something I'll have to get used to eventually I guess.

The grip on the 400D is awesome for portraiture work but it must be overwhelmingly large on the bigger crop bodies.

I went from two SLRs to none.

A friend convinced me to sell him my 40D at retail (used Orms price), he's going on a trip up Africa tomorrow, and can't afford one until pay day (next week Monday), so he's taken my 40D, and is buying a R4,000 something lens today. He's already setup a transfer to me via online banking for Monday.

So - now I guess I get to start again, I sold the 450D for R7,000, and the 40D body for R12,000, giving me R19,000 to play with.

Those are from orms right? Check SACamera. They are cheaper with most of their goods ATM. If not the 40D, I'd rather go with the Nikon D90.

Just looking on the dpreview forum, apparently the 50D has way better AF than the 40D...

If you take these two:
Nikon D90 18 - 200 VR kit
PRICE R 22,995.00

Canon EOS 50D + 18-200mm IS - 15.1 Mp
PRICE R 20,995.00

Which would be the better buy? I'm assuming the 50D, remember from threads long ago, I like wildlife photography, landscapes, etc.

I honestly don't know. There's really not much difference from the 40D to the 50D. The LCD has much more pixels. The sensor has more pixels but since it's a crop DLSR, it will exhibit more noise. I remember the review saying that the 40D is sharper. Tough decision. I'll leave it to the gurus :)

I remember reading that, and that the 50D has more noise at higher ISO's... something that can probably be fixed with firmware? I think.

I think the prices I checked were mainly the Canons, but it was probably just the 40D. I haven't checked all.

the 50D has a considerably higher pixel density.

It's a pity they used the Canon 18-200 - it's not a very sharp lens, not as good as the Nikon 18-105 from what I can tell.

I'd be keen to see how the 50D performs with, say, the 24-105L (which is tack sharp right across the frame, at any focal length.
the 50mm f/1.8 is both razor and tack sharp :p

I went to a camera shop in Canal Walk - they wouldn't let me hold it - needless to say they had a R500 markup on Orms, and lost the sale purely because of that.

Do you think they price difference is worth it over the 40D?
