SONA 2021

Farm workers minimum wage is increasing 16% this year. What do you think is going to happen? I'll tell you, food will get more expensive defeating the point of minimum wage, workers will get laid off and farmers will start moving to mechanised production.
If they can't afford a 16% wage increase, how will they afford mechanisation?

Just me. In the future I might have to hire someone, but my workload doesn't justify it right now.

I mean it will, but it's not going to ruin that kind of business. Unless somehow your profits are less than R3500 a month and doubling the minimum wage would sink you.

If that's the case, then you have much bigger problems to worry about.
Why not triple?

Why stop at double..

Because according to you the minimum wage has no impact on the economy

Who else is planning to abandon the taxpayer base?
The latest tax amendments make it a criminal offence to evade your tax responsibility. :(

Remember to keep your record clean before you exit. ;)

Why is our farming labour intensive?
because it used to be cheaper than machines, now not so much. Added bonus going mechanised is no more strikes and terrorists setting fire to your stuff. Next to go mechanised is mining imo.

Was it living wages though? I heard of the dop system in the Cape. Does it still exist?

Does it matter if it was living wages?

Simple economics means using the cheapest labour, if you have a small army of people that are cheaper to use than machines you will hire them, if machines are cheaper than labourers.... you will buy machines. Jobs are dynamically created and as soon as you tamper with them they start dissapearing.

Morals have nothing to do with what the farmer can actually afford to do with his limited resources.
