Sony 16x DL DVD Writer

I have this dvd writer and installed it and everything but I can't write faster than 4x. I had it in my old tower and it used to work fine but since I put it in my new tower it doesn't wanna write at more than 4x. If you set it any higher it just gets stuck at 1% when it writes. I have the latest BIOS any help.
 
Check that DMA (Direct Memory Access) is enabled for the drive. Also try another blank DVD, you sometimes get an odd one that does not work as required.

I have the same problem, still no solution.
 
Do you think it could have anything to do with the PSU. I currently have a 350W PSU with a 40G and a 160G hard drive the DVD writer an internal modem and an Nvidia FX5500 graphics card running off it and the monitor of course.

The monitor is not supplied by the PSU, it's simply a pass through, so you don't need to count that towards the PSU's power draw. (fyi)
 
Try to flash it with its OEM Firmware, if no longer under warranty.

Also go to Adaptec.com and find the aspicheck utility (aspichk.exe). Run that to make sure your ASPI layer is
not corrupted.

1. Under DEVICE MANAGER, open IDE ATA/ATAPI CONTROLLERS.
2. Select the drive, click PROPERTIES.
3. In PROPERTIES click on the ADVANCED SETTINGS tab.
4. Make sure that TRANSFER MODES is set to DMA IF AVAILABLE. and not PIO.

I think that's right.......
 
i not a fan of sony writers prefer lg they much better.i had the same problem with 16x and 18x sony writer just gave up and got myself lg and it works like a charm

what discs are you usings ... if they are no-name brand cheapies, that could be your problem ... i had the same problem with my lg multi writer. used the blanks they recommended and it works at 16x write speed.

also go to the sony update site and look for the firmware update. once i updated my firmware on the lg writer, it recognised all types of discs, including cheapies like benq, etc.

in general, i only use tdk discs from makro.
 
When you changed the cases, did you change the cable from the motherboard to the writer? Is it a 40 pin or 80 pin cable - my Sony DRU820 did a similar thing when I used a 40-pin cable in error...
