Sony Ericsson P990i

Ummm... what's up with SEUS taking like 10 hours to update firmware on a phone? How much data can it possibly need to download???
 
well, i said goodbye to my 990.... its not feeling well so its gone to hospital. only problem is there is no visiting hours. there is even talk of it been sent to a specialist unit for recovery (SE advanced repair)

please all, lets stand together and pray for a speedy recovery. and also appreciate your loved ones while they are around... we only truly miss them when they are gone ....

Good luck. Did you ask the doctor to reflash the patient as well?

Now not using any case, but is looking for a good one. Haven't found a proper case (for example leather) that doesn't apply pressure on the flip's keys. This means the battery drains much quicker.

Using a leather one. The leather flap has stretched and doesn't place any pressure on the flip.
 
GPS Navigation

Hi Wynsam and the rest who are interested in GPS navigation on their P990

I came across a cool GPS navigation app that is free untill 2008 (it's in Beta form and is being developed). It's called Nav4all, and you can find it here: www.nav4all.com . Point your phone's browser to www.nav4all.com/install and it will initiate the install directly to your phone.

The GUI (graphical user interface) is not all that great (very primitive), but it's got plenty of features, and so far works better than Wayfinder and Wisepilot that came with the phone.

It's downloading its maps as you drive (quick), and they are relatively up to date. I think they're using NavTeq maps.
I'm playing with a bluetooth GPS receiver from work, and so far it could direct me per voice how to get to my house. It's got also a web interface (look for the "MyWorld" tab), so you can start to building up your own collection of private maps and POIs.

So untill I can get the SA maps for TomTom, I'll be experimenting with this one. Thanks for the tip on a GPS receiver - it's a good one and you will see it is also being recommended and sold on the nav4all website.

i did ask the doctor.... well actually they wouldnt let me speak to the doc, it was just the nurse behind the desk...

i spent the whole day trying to get hold of the minister of health (that be dillon)
but the minister has been out of office, so i just told the nurse that the minister had approved the "injection of life"

so heres hoping

With all the woes you've had with your P990i, it's a wonder that you haven't thrown it against the wall yet. :)

*I made my P990i sexy again, took the crystal case off. ;)

Thanks for the headups. I assume I need a GPS bluetooth unit first?

Are you in a 3G area, I cant see the Edge or gprs connection working to download maps as I drive.

using a case on your phone is like wearing a rubber :) nothing like the real thing
 
I agree on the case issue. problem is the phone is going to look bad in a short while. Not using a rubber can have consequences!

My case already has a few scratches on it that I am glad are not on the phone.

You are right, Wynsam. When I took the crystal case off, I could see a lot of scratches on the back of the case... :sick:

Guess I'll have to take extra care with it now... :confused:

Talking about "rubbers".. how does the P990 looks with the silicone covers? There's one in a store close by and I can't get myself so far to buy it. Too much money wasted in case it looks/works bad.

Hi Wynsam,

Yes, you need a GPS receiver to play with this software. I'm currently using one from work (Falcom product from RFDesign). It's an old receiver, but works well. I'm testing it with current softwares to see whether it is worthwhile to spend money on a bluetooth GPS receiver.

I don't have 3G coverage where I live, but it works fine with GPRS connection. It downloads small bits of scalable map it seems. If you go in a no coverage area, then obviously you're screwed (map wise).
 
recovery update....

seems like my 990 survived the night in hospital. hopefully well on the road to recovery.

please do not send flowers to the hospital as the SE staff will probably keep them for themselves. rather donations in lieu of flowers will be accepted by myself oh and of course given to charity...

Would be nice to get hold of the map and put in onto a duo card.
 
Since getting my phone unbranded, did a master reset, ran SEUS for new firmware (R4B), and must say I am very impressed - have not installed SM or TP or anything else for now, and am experiencing a nice, fast, stable phone... for me, this is a preview of where things are headed with one or two more decent firmware releases!
