Sony Ericsson P990i

@Valerion
Thanks for the info managed to sort it out.
@Aqualung
Thanks for the kind words. I am really starting to enjoy the phone. Not too difficult.
@Kingrob
You definitely won't be sorry. Even though there are a couple of irritating aspects. The quality overrides it all. Your expectations could be a little higher than mine, but i am sooooo in love with this phone.

General

1.Battery lasting about a day. But as previous post have mentioned this should improve.
2. It has frozen on me a couple of times, but only if i try do too many things at once. Or too quickly.
3.Ive turned predictive text off when flap is open, it makes it easier to write with the stylus. Don't know if anyone got better advice?
4.Tried to play the golf game. I had no additional applications open and it looked as if the system was taking strain.

Kingrob all i can say about the phone is WOW WOW WOW!!!! Can't wait for you to get yours to hear your opinion.

@Bruce000 - you're welcome ! ;) Glad you're enjoying your new toy.

Do try the Swiss Manager app - it is freeware - and really goes a long way to keeping the phone running smoothly

Bruce, you're getting me all excited here.... :)

I've had my P900 for a year, then got 'upgraded' by my insurance company to a P910 (got hi-jacked and my mobile was in the car) and now it's time for something new.

I reckon a year with a mobile phone is about the 'sweet-spot'. Then it's time for something new. :)

Battery Life on P990i

Hi all

As a user of a P990 for the last 4 weeks I was also dissapointed with the Battery life. It would only last 36 hours and then with the level on 2% I will start to recharge.

I visitted the SoneEricsson shop in Vodaworld and compained about the battery life. The guy asked me whether I am on automatic settings in terms of the network all the time? I said I do not know and did not change network settings. He did the following:

Open main menu
Open tools
Open control panel
Open connections
Open Mobile networks
Open the drop down menu next to menu title
Select GSM/3G networks
On this menu, he changed the setting to GSM only.

He adviced me that when I wanted to use 3G, to change back to either the 3G only or the GSM + 3G option.

The amazing thing is, that where the battery level was 72% when he did the changes, it is now Sunday night 9pm and the level is still 25%. Without the settings change the system would have died more than 28 hours ago. I had bluetooth active for all this time and used the phone a lot, including accessing the internet where I live on GPRS (no 3G coverage) or with WLAN.

When you look at the talktime/standby time specs of all phones, you will notice that in 3G usage thetalk standby time is dramatically lower, less than a sixth of normal GSM operations.

With the changed settings, I am sure that I will go at least 4 days battery life, the same I had before with my W800.

@Aqualung Thanks for the info, I did load swiss manager the first day i got the phone following your advice from one of your previous posts. Really helps alot.
@FireTelkom
Thanks for the info, just changed my settings and will let you know if it helps me too.
Cheers

I think SonyEriccson is gonna change their support web site link to our thread... :)

@FireTelkom

that is good advice. I did that with my P910 back in the old days! and it got me an extra day or two of battery life

Have had my P990 on GSM only setting for about a week now and get 2 to 2.5 days battery life
( I am playing with the phone a lot though :) )

The P910 doesn't support 3G?

There's no setting for GSM only on the P910, or am I wrong?

*Is this deliberate to lure the king out? The queen is playing games with the king!! :eek:

Yeah, changing the setting to GSM only has helped me allot too. I am also in a non 3g coverage area. Also changing the screen brightness level to 50% has helped.

I believe that you can also purchase a stronger battery from Sony Ericsson for the phone... a B34 I think. The P990i comes standard with the 33... Will be interesting to see what a difference that makes.

Has anyone tried push e-mail yet?

@kingrob - Check ! ;)

There is such a setting on the P910 somewhere - if you select it the little blue GPRS triangle above the signal strength indicator blanks out.

@MJB - agree , I've got screen brightness on 60%, haven't tried push email yet tho'

Is it possible for me to connect via Wap with the P990? Looked through the book the only time they mention Wap is in push email.
Thanks
B

MJB, where u from? I also want to get a casing like that. If you in CT we can do 1 order?

@ rellik

In East London... Not sure how we would do that...

Na its ok then, if u were in CT was easy...
Ah well of i go to go order mine in the mean time. Maybe if im lucky i'll have my phone before get the casing.

Yeah, P990i owners know how to talk :D

Any idea for a date on the new firmware? Hope it fixes up the memory thing...
