Sony Ericsson P990i

AAAAHH!!! MTNDD I was looking forward to your opinion!!! Oh well hope your not going to be disappointed.
Have you managed to play with a P990 yet?
What made you make up your mind to wait?

Okay here goes,

Here's my review

The Nokia N9x series always came with different themes, from the N91 (Music Phone), N92 (Mobile TV) to N93 (Camcorder Phone). Nokia N95 is going to be the one in the spy picture on top, yet another style in N9x series. It has a dual slider that gives you a keypad section when you move the slider downward, and give another music control panel when you move the slider upward.

Some specifications include a 5 megapixel camera using the Carl Zeiss lens with manual shutter. The N95 can record a movie in DVD quality like its sibling the Nokia N93. Memory storage can be expanded through micro SD which is always a bonus to put more music files on which works for me. Headphone can be used with the 3.5mm jack to listen to the music. It will support high speed HSPDA, you can also get connected to Wi-Fi to save the data connection cost which works for me as well............

Okay so here goes here is what the phone has below

- 5MP camera (Carl Zeiss) with manual shuter.
- 3,5 mm jack.
- micro SD.
- Symbian S60 3rd edt.
- 2,4" (240 x 320)
- WLAN
- HSDPA
- Radio
- 2 way slide
- DVD quality video
- BT2.0
- UPnP
- USB2.0
- GPS with worldmaps of over 100 different countries.
- Podcasting support.

And yes this is what sold me over and over again

I was also very keen on the Nokia N95, but what convinced me in the end to rather get the P990i was the ability to write on the screen. I think I'm gonna write my first book on my P990i. :)

The Martin Fields screen protector is absolutely fantastic, I'm just sad that I didn't get one last year for my P910i - would've saved myself R1200! :(

Come to think of it, the P990i already has most of the features the N95 will have, except the 5MP camera, but I'm very impressed with the picture quality of my P990i's camera.

Sony knows something about cameras, oh, and mobile phones as well.... ;)

@ kingrob

How long did it take for your SP to arrive? Mine left for JHB on the 30th according to the tracking.

I am worried about scratches etc. on my screen. How long did you use yours before the SP?

Mine took a week to arrive, it actually arrived the same day as my crystal case - how cool is that?

I used mine for two days without the screen protector, but once you put the screen protector on, you won't see any scratches, even if you made one or two. I ordered a SP for my P910i as well - and believe me, that screen was one big scratch, but after I put the SP on, the screen actually looks 'smooth' again. Very cool. :)

Well that is very good to hear. My crystal case arrived about 2 days ago now and I ordered them the same time.

Anyway, I was just worried because dust really seems to be attracted to the screen.

Well hopefully I will have a little package in the mail tomorrow :)

Hi guys ! Won't be online for long...flu...coughing something horrible ( living up to my namesake right now :( )

@ MJB - it takes 7 -10 working days, yr SP should arrive any day now, hang in there

@ Piesang - have never used an iMate
Most would agree the Pseries phones are for those who prefer a phone/PDA rather than PDA/phone ( ie a phone with PDA functions rather than the other way round )

Pro's - intuitive UI
- stability ( the P910 was universally acknowledged to be on eof the most stable smartphones out there, we know there are some firmware issues with the P990 but these are
A) largely taken care of by 3rd party freeware
B) should be ironed out as further firmware is released
- tech specs as kingrob has already mentioned :)

- the basic PDA functions on the P990 are more than adequate, it ships with Quickoffice which as already mentioned on this forum runs a very functional Word and Excel ( and Powerpoint ) fully compatible with equivalent Windows software.

The full list of specs are easily found with a google search and too detailed to list here.

I have little experience with "other" ie Windows based and other smartphones. I believe battery life and memory leaks are issues with some of the models.

Many of us have previously owned Pseries smartphones and have been happy enough with them to continue to use their "descendants !"

I'm not trying to "convince" you to get one , just stating why I use one.

Succinctly put - I like the touch screen, the UI, the apps it ships with ( and the 3rd party apps that follow ), the wide variety of connectivity options it has and the superb quality of the 2MP camera.

@ aqualung

Sorry to hear about the flu... Hope you get well soon :). P.S. I hope you got my thank you mail for the themes...

Get well

Sad to hear you're sick, aqualung! :(

I hope you get well soon, will miss you. :)

@ piesang

I have used the Imate jam for quite some time... I found the pda to be very slow and just plain and simply a hassle. My preference for the p990i was simply a matter of wanting a quality phone with pda functions (agree with aqualung).

Do you get the "Special Screwdriver" in the package when you buy the P990 to remove the Flip?

Yes, screwdriver and extra set of screws...

Are we turning you into the P990i owner :D

Yes, but the keys on the flip has got much more functionality now, I would'nt remove it...

*I'm getting very fond of the RDS Radio! I've reassigned the hardware key for the media player to the Radio and when waiting for clients at coffee shops or restaurants, my radio is always on. Sound quality is excellent. :)

Can you believe that I only tried the radio side out for the first time today :o
It works nicely :)

Yeah, same here...

Speaking about that... Piesang, that is ofcourse the other nice thing about the P990... ONE HANDED OPERATION ;)

I've already saved 11 radio stations on the phone and just scroll up & down between them - absolutely love it.

Thank you Sony!! ;)

Very true - that's what irritated my friend so much about his HP 6915. Try making a phone call with a i-Mate while you're driving!

@ kingrob

Maybe the long wait for the P990i release in South Afrixca, was a blessing in disguise. I had read about so many complaints on the earlier releases... and I have to say that I have had no problem with mine. I think ours came at the right firmware version.

Yeah, the future firmware will be allot better and add a little more functionality... But I am happy for the time being :)

Hope you don't mind me asking more questions.:D

What is the Business Card Scanner and how does it work?

Can you listen to the radio without headphones or does it have to plugged in like all the other SE's?
