Sony Ericsson P990i

That is unfortunate. All I know is I will never take my phone to Vodacom again because I'm pretty sure those bastards are waiting for the perfect opportunity to get their useless f/w on my phone. May this phone never break...

MTN

take note. It seems the people do not like branded phones. Please please never go the route that VM has taken and start branding phones.

;)

I agree with this. The Vodafone branding I saw on a friend's M600 was one of the 3 main reasons I ported from VC to MTN. I hope they never go that route.

@FoRmFactor

I assume you haven't managed to successfully hook into your home wireless network.

So lets start at the beginning: When you said you initially played around for a few hours and cannot connect to your home wireless LAN, what exactly happened?

Here are a few examples:
a) You scan for any present wireless networks and don't see any.
b) You scan for any present networks, sees it, go through the Setup New Account wizard, try to connect, and cannot.
c) You scan for the network, sees it, go through the Setup New Account wizard, try to connect and can actually "connect" (according to the Connection Manager). BUT you still cannot access the internet even while 'connected'.

This will help us to see where we must start looking.

By the way, apparently PPOE refers to creating a VPN network connection 'through your wireless connection' (with an account username and password), that way enabling you to surf the net via this specific account. Unfortunately I'm unfimiliar with this, but let us not give up hope yet.

Let me know.

Anyone checked out http://fma.sourceforge.net - control your SE mobile from your desktop? Looks pretty cool, would be interested to know how it works with the P990....

It's amazing open source software that's available for a few years now. I used it with my SE Z600 back in the days, and NO official communication suite could come close to it. I could even remotely take photos.

But unfortunately it's open sourced - meaning developers do it in their spare time, so they never had time to make it compatible with Symbian UIQ. Even from the P800 days people were requesting support of the Pxx series phones, but with no official funding, that never took place.

It will be great if they can in future. Worthwhile watching that space.

Meerkat sufferers and Backups

Greetings everyone

I also have a P990i with Vodacom software and I am stuck at R7 firmware despite trying an update. Please let us in Cape Town know if:
a) Anyone has had success at a service branch down here at getting their phone unbranded
b) Anyone who (or knows someone who) has Davinci'd their phone

To those with old Firmware who cannot backup because the phone keeps timing out; the trick is to delete all your backups. (You can move them out in Explorer if you need them). With no backups listed in the SE Backup Manager, you can then backup up all your stuff no problem. I found this out on the mysymbian lists. Hope this helps!

Blackberry

To Blackberry the P990, or not, that is the question. What advantage does the Blackberry Internet (as opposed to Enterprise) service offer that cant be accomplished by a scheduled send and receive?

I am I missing something?

Hi gecko, thanks so much for helping, it is really awesome!

Anyway, i search for the network on my p990 and it detects the network, when i try and set up the account and try to connect it says "unable to connect"? even though i have set the account up, i suspect i am forgetting something in the set up process.

i do not connect through a vpn but one of the computers connected to my home network does.

Hope this is what u r looking for?
Thanks again:)

Hi FoRmFacTor

It's a pleasure, but I'm not sure that I can help you successfully. But let's go through the steps and see whether you missed something:

1) Scan for network (with WiLan enabled).

2) Choose the network you picked up tap on the "Connect" button (arrows).

3) Setup Account wizard - choose YES.

4) Under Authentication, you can choose Open, Shared, 802.1x, WPA and WPA-PSIC. Now I don't know what all these stand for or what they mean, but lets choose "Open" for now. "Open" worked for me at work.

5) Under type of network, choose "Infrastructure". Ad-hoc is only for when you have typically 2 computers connecting to each other on an ad-hoc basis (point-to-point).

6) Tap on Next.

7) Under Data Encryption, choose "WEP"

8) Tap on Next.

9) Default WEP key is "1". (I assume this is the default option)

10) Under WEP Key Type, select ASCII (not HEX).

11) Enter your unique WEP key (don't share this with anyone!)

12) Tap on Next.

13) Select "Save"

14) When asked, select "Add to Internet Group". (This enable your applications like the internet browser to be linked to your Wireless LAN when connected)

15) The big moment: Try to connect. If it is unable to connect, try a few times before giving up. I find sometimes it connects on the 2nd or 3rd try only.

If you ARE able to connect, go to your browser and see if you can access the net (while not using your GPRS/3G connection). If so, congrats! :D

If not :( , edit your wireless connection which you've just created, and try different combinations with the following options:
- Authentication: Choose Shared, save and try to connect, choose 802.1x; save and try to connect, etc..
- You can try connect by changing your network type to "ad-hoc", but i doubt this will work. Ad-hoc is rare and not very practical.
- Last hope is to change your Encryption key to HEX format. This is unlikely, but maybe your WEP key IS in HEX format. Never seen one though.

This is unfortunately all I can suggest without being there myself. This is outside my scope of expertise, but who knows, we might hit jackpot with one of those combinations.

Good luck, and let us know.

You could try sell it on bidorbuy.co.za

Prices range from R3200 - R5000. Alternatively, try the Star or the Junkmail but beware of scam artists and criminals

I bought my P910 second hand through bidorbuy. Process went smoothly.

Bump.

Is anyone using blackberry on the P990?

Yes a collegue of mine is using Blackberry connect on his P990 why what do you need to know?

MTNDD

If its worth the R150 per month. Your colleague, I assume, is not having to pay for his subscription. I will have too. I like the idea of push email but am not sure if its worth R150. Wont a send and recieve on a schedule do the same thing?
