Sony Ericsson P990i

I just made a mistake and is feeling quite embarrassed about it, as I don't usually make this kind of mistake.

When I get a new phone like this, I usually make a copy of what is on the memory stick & internal memory, in case I have to wipe it one day. So I started to copy my stuff off my memory stick and went on to copy it all off. And on to my internal flash drive. Somehow I managed to delete the pictures in my internal memory, instead of copying them ... though I still have the contents of the Clipart and Frames folders.

If anyone would please be so kind as to forward me those pictures so I can get my collection complete again, I would very much appreciate it.

Otherwise I must say I am impressed with my MTN P990. Now if only they can actually get my number porting from Vodacom sorted out, I would be VERY happy ...

Can anyone tell me what the best screen protectors and cases are for the P990i... And where to get them.

Which one's are you guys using?

One other thing: Have you guys heard when the R9******* firmware will be out?

@ Valerion - I will try do that for you as soon as I can...

@ valerion - I presume you are referring to the bundled wallpapers that came with the phone. I have already deletd the ones I don't like ( am obsessed about clearing "clutter" off my phone ! ). However they are all available on the sony ericsson website ( sony ericsson.com ) under "fun and downloads " - free.

@ MJB - I swear by the martin fields screen protectors. ( see my posts a couple of pages back ). They are available from DOML.com. They are superb, really worth the money.

My case..I bought the krusell pouch 'cos that worked well for my P910. However for the P990 the same style : Hasn't got a cutout for the keylock button, and
the band that holds the phone in place gets in the way of the touchscreen and the top row of qwerty keypad.
So I got a crystal case from..umm...brando.hk ( google them ) . It's really nice -it shows the phone instead of hiding it and all the cuotouts are in the right places.

P.S See the symbian thread on esato for more on the latest firmware. Week 48 is still the offical answer ( end Nov I believe ). Someone is posting there on his experience with it - it doesn't sound THAT much more stable than current. Nothing SwM can't do.

I am going to wait a couple of weeks after it comes out and see what the early adopters say before I put it on my phone...

@Valerion

it sounds like you are copying the contents of your memory stick onto your phone. MAny people have suggested that keeping your phone memory as free as possible is a good thing...considering the RAM constraints...I personally keep most stuff on the memory stick. I like to think it helps things run faster...:p

No, I was copying the contents of both my memory stick and phone memory to my PC, to reduce clutter. And the SE website was giving so many issues today, I gave up on it for now.

Ta... Thanks.

How long did it take for the stuff to arrive. My screen looks as dirty as hell right now... I must at least get that screen protector soon...

@ Valerion

PM me your E-Mail addy if you still need those pics... Let me know all you want...

@Valerion

okay, sorry :)

@ MJB - it took between 5-7 days for the screen protector and case to arrive. They airmail the stuff.

Thanks... Did you just take the standard mail option?

If by the standard mail option you mean the $1 or $2 option, as opposed to the $$ couried express option...yes, I did.

I'm getting really good battery life since I turned the brightness down a bit, and definitely make sure you enable the power save feature (1 or 2 minutes)
The screen will not stay on while charging, and at the end of the day, I'm down very little on the battery charge at the end of the day after moderate use. being in a 3G area and constantly searching does seem to use more battery life.
Btw..the new phones do seem to charge fast on arrival. I think this is probably since MTN must receive them..put on some charge at least to install their apps, and then seal and deliver them. i think the partial charge comes from this.
Have had one or 2 lockups..but nothing I am worried about. While on a call...starting the camera too fast and shutting it down too fast...had to remove the battery. But not serious.
Have installed power converter and also worldmate pro...both great apps. Worldmate is one of my fav progs..especially for up to date currency conversions and even weather forecast anywhere in the world.
have had MTN open the ticket with Volantis again to get the streaming recognised on the P990..hopefully will have some progress soon.
Might just cut a piece from my spare garmin 350 GPS screen protector...as it works very well.
Irritations.... has anyone been able to properly delete an email with attachment from the server? Just does a local delete, and can't make it synchronise the next time and delete off the server. I could do that on the P900, but not the P990. Will have to install profimail to do that I think..which is a better email prog anyways.
Call reception etc so far so good. All the rest seems good, and no other hiccups. Still a great phone, and if they can just bring out an "X" application to properly close apps without using SM, all will be great.
Browsing the net on it quite a bit, and Opera works great..with the rendering very good. You can actually surf on this phone decently.
All in all..still a great phone. I am pretty sure there must be network unlocking apps for anyone with a network locked phone (are there any?)...but not sure if the P990 is considered DCT4 or something newer. Anyone know?
Radio works very well..and the business card reader actually does work..even if you have to make some manual changes.
Still waiting for some new decent games to come out, but all in good time.

No worries, I'm not always the most coherent ;)

Mmmm ... now to decide whether to spend the money and buy the screen protectors. They do sound like a good idea *ponders*

@ Valerion

Just e-mailed you the pictures...

O and screen protectors are worth it... My screen is already all messy... Must order too.

Anyone having problems calling on MTN after 8?

808 - Can you order the protectors from MTN? An tell me, are you experiencing any problems dialing out after 8pm?

tnks

No, I just meant I got hold of MTN on 808 after 22:00. No issues dialing out either.

Mmmm .... after some more playing, some comments from my side.

WLAN works, mostly. I've got a D-Link DWL-2100AP and at first I couldn't connect. Eventually I figured out that I was using WPA-PSK, with AES enforced. I switched this to Auto, and used TKIP to connect from the phone, and it works perfectly. The phone has an AES option when using WPA-PSK, so not sure why it doesn't work. According to SE support, they support WPA2, and I know the WPA2 standard mandates AES. They escalated the query.

I then tried to establish an IPsec VPN into my internal network. Mmmmm. Was told I need a policy first. So I installed the Certicom VPN client, but then found out that it only supports a couple of brand-name routers (Cisco, Nortel, etc). No support in there for a Linux IPsec server :( I emailed SE support about this too, and was told I need to install a policy file, which I need to get from my system administrator. I mailed back asking for documentation, and they go silent on me ...

Anyone got any solutions/ideas for the VPN issue?

Popped in at Metro shop in Vodaworld and saw a 2GB mem duo pro stick for R1129 - not bad.

Getting used to the phone slowly but surely. It's quite different to the Nokia 6600. Its like learning to walk again. I found my self getting frustrated initially but getting the hang of it now. I don't know if this has happened to any of you guys or girls yet. My phone was on charge when our electricity went out. The phone switched off as the power went our. Is this normal? Any one now how to check your delivered reports on your sms's?
No 3G facilities here by us so i didn't even bother getting a 3g card. Will have to see what MTN will do this neck of the woods.
How would a person close applications if you didnt use swiss manager I have installed it just curious?
Sorry for all the stupid questions. Not as learned as you guys when it comes to IT and these new devices.

Cheers
B
