Sony Ericsson P990i

THREE pages while I'm gone - you guys have been really busy :)

@kingrob I'm glad you finally took your phone out the box - does that mean your SP arrived ?

@Gecko - Sman is a work in progress it seems - the coders are having some major problems with the new symbian signed restrictions

PS @kingrob - glad you approve of the phone ;)

@aqualung, ja, SMan was such a great app for UIQ2.1. I hope they can sort out the signed restrictions.

@kingrob yes, does this mean you've got your SP?

@aqualung Did you have a late night at work?

Yup, and have laryngitis too so currently communicating best by typing :o

( My colleagues enjoyed the silence haha )

No, I have not received my screen protector yet.... :)

*Something I can't get to work:

If you go to your contacts and want to 'jump' to a specific letter, say 'P', I press 7 on the keypad, but instead of jumping to 'P', it wants to jump to '7'? :confused:

Not so cool if you have 258 contacts - the poor jog-dial won't last long. :(

Anyone got any ideas?

Hi

Go to control panel -->device-->text input-->flip closed keypad-->input method-->select multitap/prediction

:)

Aqualung, you just got a 'virtual' kiss!!! :)

I've been struggling with this since yesterday afternoon...

*I see the young padiwan has much to learn... ;)

* Secretly thinking you got a dud phone too I'll bet, and cursing me for recommending it ;)

PS do you agree with my comparison now : P910 --> P990 UI is like Com64 -- > Mac ( or high end computing platform of your choice, you seem to be a Windows man )

Never, my wise queen! :)

I was simply blown away by the quality of the pictures this phone can take & love the usage of the whole screen as the viewfinder.

*This phone is growing on me & I must admit, does make my P910i feel very 'old'... ;)

Yes, the P990i's OS compared to the P910i's OS, is like comparing Windows Vista with Windows 3.1 - there's no compare.

Yes, I'm a Windows man, but would love one of the new dual-core Macs!! *I've downloaded all the ads - PC vs Mac - from Apple's web site. It's hillarious the way they're poking fun at Microsoft... :)

Am loving the 2mp cam...soooo useful for work ( take a quick shot of CT scan etc )

plus happy snaps of the beach, mountain :)

and fairly decent video capture too

PS don't compare P990 to Vista...see MTNDD 's comments...:p

I took some snaps & was very impressed with the quality, I don't have to carry an 'aim-and-shoot' with me anymore...

*I think the pictures actually look better than the ones I took with my Cybershot U20!! Seriaas. :)

The media player seems to be a bit 'unforgiving' if the quality of the mp3s are not very high, sounds a bit 'tinny'. :(

Will have to investigate & play with the equalizer settings.

*Love the RDS Radio - absolutely superb!! :)

Been lazy...just dumped some Mp3 tracks from iTunes onto the memory stick...imported at 128kbps...sounds fine to me...as good as my iPod...although I'm not a raging audiophile, I like my music to sound good :)

Yes the radio is great innit !

* Once you go Mac, you'll never go back ;) However you went the P990 route already so we'll leave that one alone for now :rolleyes:

@Kingrob
If you haven't already go menu-tools-control panel-device-backlight-Brightness and set to 60% it help a lot with battery life but you probably did RTFM so you would have figured this out already. I RTFM and it took me a week to figure out. I can be a little doff sometimes. Hope this helps a little. CHEERS

I've always secretly admired a Mac, especially when I started working at Reuters in London, was always staring and lusting after the web designers' 24'' wide screen Mac displays... :(

The web designers were always nice people, till you mentioned the word 'PC' and then you got chased away. ;)

*Really starting to fall in love with the P990i, I've now established that it is a 'one hand phone' and that I will be able to drive/make notes, without having to whip out the stylus. Oh, and the new keypad lock is a real treat. :)

I must confess, I'm not missing the 5-way jog dial so much, due to the extra functionality that Sony has bestowed on the keypad (and also makes it much easier to operate with one hand) . Also, I haven't used the stylus much?? Damn, did I just say that?! :eek:

Thanks for the tip, Bruce!! :)

I feel like a total 'noob' with this fantastic phone, but after my RTFM session last night, I've figured out most of the changes. Oh, and I found the default security code (0000) in the manual - it helps to RTFM! ;)

Want to start experimenting with the 3G goodies on the phone, but 3G reception is not so available where I live. Occasionally see the 3G icon displayed on the toolbar, but not enough to my liking. I know I should turn it off to save battery life, but hopefully I can get the new 'long life battery' soon and it won't be such a hassle anymore... :)

@kingrob

I don't want to proselytise ( this isn't the thread for it anyway ! ) but believe me, the Mac displays and the *wow* factor of the physical designs is matched by the cleanness of the Aqua UI and the fact that *stuff just works* . Very little fiddling/coaxing of the OS required.
Plus (currently) no viruses....!

@Bruce000 - hullo ! Still enjoying your toy ?

PS You're not going to let this RTFM thing go are you ? :p

;)

No, not at all! I would love to get one of those new dual-core Macs...money would be the only factor holding me back! :)

Is there any news about syncing software for the P990i on your Mac?

That is not cool, Sony must sort themselves out! The king will talk to them! :mad:

The new sync software is really cool, it's like a dashboard from where you can interact with the phone, (interface looks very different from the PC suite for the P910i) and it has a new feature that connects your 3G phone to a laptop/pc and functions as a 3G modem.
