Business Card Scanner works very well.

Yes, you need to have the earphones plugged in to act as the antenna... You can transfer the sound to the speaker phone... But yeah, you need the earphones.

Final words

Well, all we can say is that the Sony Ericsson P990 is an excellent smartphone and if you need one you should definitely consider it when making your buying decision. When all the software bugs are worked out, the end product would be a device which hardly has any serious flaws.

The competing HTC TyTN (a.k.a. Qtek 9600) and the Nokia E70 are rather good choices, too, so make your mind rather carefully when choosing the device that's right for you.

When considering some of the competing smartphones with QWERTY keyboards, bear in mind that the obvious advantage of P990 - its touchscreen might turn out to be its most obvious drawback in the first days of usage. The Series 60 user interface is usually a lot easier to get used to even for an inexperienced user. The UIQ 3.0 interface would create many inconveniences for a novice. You would have to use the stylus all the time and while it may seem easy, in fact it demands that both your hands are free which may not always be the case. With the flip opened, you can hardly dial a number, for example, without concentrating your whole attention to the smartphone's screen while many of the functions require that you open the flip in order to use them. So in the end, it's a bit of trade-off. And where you stand is entirely up to you.

I still don't think it's my choice of phone. Personal oppinion that is.

Yeah, choosing a pda is somewhat of a difficult decision...

When I say one handed operation, I am referring to quickly dialing a number... Sms'ing etc. PDA side, you would need to use both.

I use it mainly for phoning and so this works for me. I do use the pda functions, but not as much as general calls. The P990 is better at that. So I guess it would really depend on what you are needing it for.

At the moment I'm using a SE W810i for making calls and a i-Mate Jasjar for PDA and internet browsing. So I'm used to the 2 hand PDA thing.

I must still say, I got a liking in the P990:)

Also keeping in mind that the review was done in August - I hope it was not a Vodafone branded one! :eek:

Maybe the long wait for the P990i release in South Afrixca, was a blessing in disguise. I had read about so many complaints on the earlier releases... and I have to say that I have had no problem with mine. I think ours came at the right firmware version.

Yeah, the future firmware will be allot better and add a little more functionality... But I am happy for the time being :)

I TOTALLY agree!

All the bad things that I've read about the P990i made me a bit nervous, but since I got my P990i, it hasn't 'hanged' once, hasn't crashed once - it just works like it should. :)

Ok, the king wishes to share another great feature of the P990i!

I've reassigned the media player button to the RDS radio and to start the radio, just plug-in your headset (acts as antennae) and hold in the media button for two seconds. The radio starts immediately, without having to open the flip or press buttons on the keypad. To 'surf' between preset radio stations, just press the media button. Must admit, the RDS function makes a big difference, the sound is crystal clear and earphones very good quality.

While I was listening to the radio, I put the phone next to the bed and thought - damn, it would be cool if you can change stations with the answer button of the headset. And, would you believe it, Sony has thought of it! You can change the preset stations with the answer button of your headset.

To switch off the radio, just hold in the media button for two seconds again.

Can you please tell me the date you ordered your SP from Doml, and when it arrived. I have just called the post office and they tell me it's not even in the country yet :(

I can't remember the date, but you can track your order with DomL - they have sent you an email with the tracking number, go to their web site and see where exactly it is...

I've decided that my P990i will be my Xmas pressie to myself this year! :)

Gonna box it up again, wrap it in expensive paper, buy a nice card and put it under the tree!! :D
