I really like a Sony Vaio CS26 laptop and also am interested in the HP Pavilion series. Can someone help me choose? Budget is 10k-12k.

Thanks!

I'd definately take a sony over a HP although all of my notebooks have been HP and never a problem and would reccomend them

Build quality on the Sony will be much better but will surely be more pricey, as with anything you get what you pay for.

Yep, Sony makes some really nice performing laptops. A friend of mine got himself ( the Vaio VGN-SR26GN ) one the other day, and it's just awesome! Well, compared to a HP, I'll take the Sony.
Oh, he paid R12k at IC.

I've got a top of the range HP, well it was when I got it 2 years ago (DV9293EA). In the space of 2 years I've had the motherboard, graphics card and cpu changed twice, the 2nd time out of warranty and at a cost of R7k. If you do take the HP Pavilion extend the warranty to 3 years... Seriously!!!!

There is something very dubious about HP's and their build quality, not sure what. I've taken excellent care of it and actually use it at home and seldom on the road.

Sony's are pricey but I suspect the price tag includes something better than a 1 year warranty and perhaps structural integrity which the HP's seem to lack.

Also consider a Toshiba yes!!!

Sony.

HP and Sony are both great, but Pavillion is crap whereas Vaio is good.

Thank you so much!
Very very very helpful. Seems like everyone agrees on Sony.

Thanks for sharing your experience Sandmanm34.

Very much appreciated everyone!

Well I have had my fair share of experience with HPs, and I've found their build quality to be top-notch

The only HPs that consistently give problems are the Pavillions. I'm not sure how it has changed since the new Pavillion series came in, though.

Hehe, yeh I like pink. Yeh, price isn't the best but I feel it's worth it.
:o:o

I have had 4 VAIO's in the last 7 years, and not a single major problem, apart from one fan failure on an SZ, was replaced by Sony FOC even though the machine was out of the warranty period.

Sony backup service is unrivalled in my opinion, and with the excellent build quality is what you pay for.

The VAIO VGN-SR26GN is your machine, for R12K you cannot do much better IMHO.

Vote for sony as well. Used to get HP for the office and they've not held up at all. Almost all have dead screens, keys fall off too easy, etc, etc. My brother coughed up R15K for a brand new HP and the next day a key popped off. :P

That said, the low-end HP 530/550 range is a solidly constructed unit. I don't know why they don't use that chassis design for the business machines.
