Sony rethinks SA strategy amid huge loss

Whoever has been doing Sony's marketing in South Africa has been poor. You see Samsung and Hisense advertising their tvs all over the place. I was at Makro last weekend and Samsung was basically in your face the whole time. I can't even remember seeing a Sony tv there.

Somewhere Sony SA went from great products at a good price to great products at an expensive price and Samsung stole the whole market. I was a huge sony supporter who now buys samsung.

Sony are struggling globally, not just in South Africa. They're closing more and more divisions in an effort to streamline the company.

I wonder how long before they crack and sell off Sony Pictures Entertainment, or the rights to a few franchises. Marvel have been sniffing around buying back the Spider Man brand for years now. A deal would benefit both parties, I feel.

I gave up on Sony when I complained to the MD of Sony (South Africa) and he told me to f**k off and not to bother him with complaints.

I subsequently learnt that my treatment mirrored Sony's attitude towards customers world-wide

As a result I am one of the many who will enjoy holding a party on Sony's grave !

I'll join you, and bring a hammer to smash my vaio.

Their products are good but their prices are way out of line with the competition.

I hope you let Sony Japan know

Can they really be considered a competitor ? I think that label died a long time ago.

I liked Sony products and my 46" is still a Sony Bravia. I always had an uneasy feeling about buying a TV from a manufacturer who started off with fridges, aircons and washing machines (Samsung, LG), but I guess Samsung/LG seems to be the only viable options when it comes to TVs nowadays.

... computer components, cameras, software, cellular devices, cargo ships, ocean-going drilling equipment, etc ... Samsung does almost everything. And they are considered one of the best LCD/LED/AMOLED manufacturers in the world. LG is a lot smaller, but still as far as I can see a decent manufacturer.

Their products are not good. Their professional products are good, but so are JVC and Panasonic and Canon, but consumer stuff is overpriced.

Sony makes / made good stuff, but their non-adherence to industry standards and pricing was a problem.

I've found some of the Sony products I used to be of poor design and material quality.
If I compared them to other Japanese or Made in Japan products, outside or professional equipment (we own some Sony pro equipment) their consumer and even premium consumer stuff is overrated and too expensive.

I haven't had a problem with quality, mainly with pricing and standards, eg using their own memory cards, etc.

As far as I am concerned Sony dug their own grave with poor management and their investment in the movie/music business, which created conflicts of interest.

For example, their conflict with the music industry stopped them from providing MP3 features for their Mini disc music players thereby creating the gap for Apple iPod music players.

At the time Apple was a failing computer manufacturer, and this gap in the market saved them.

In short, Sony incompetence saved Apple.
