Just FYI guys:

Manufacturer will not be able to secure further stock due to manufacturing constraint. Will be discontinued until further notice.

If you were looking at getting this on contract from Vodacom you are out of luck for now.

That is soo sad... guess people will have to import if they are interested. Its kind of crap phone if it wasn't for the games and controller.

And the price class would have placed it in a perfect place for kids/teenagers.

Another free exclusive:

FIFA 12 Free for all Xperia Play users till February 2012, just click on the EA games icon in Xperia Play app, or if you look under More games you should have a FIFA 12 icon now.

They just added Guerrilla Bob for free over at Getjar Gold. Great game with proper Play controller support. I played the THD version on my tablet and must say it feels more at home on the Play than a touch screen.

Great little War Game just got Xperia Play support in the latest update, no idea why, as I prefer the touch screen but the FX at least is smooth now.
So hope you picked it up on the 80c Sale, if not you missing a great turn base strategy game.

ICS beta ROM now available for unlocked Xperia™ PLAY smartphones

Upon request we’re today releasing an Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) beta for Xperia™ PLAY, and we’re really interested in getting your feedback on this beta release. As games are such a crucial part of Xperia™ PLAY, we would like to know how well this ICS beta for Xperia™ PLAY works when you’re playing games. Read on for download links and installation instructions!

After releasing the ICS beta ROM for three other Xperia™ smartphones a while back, we got a lot of requests from Xperia™ PLAY users that wanted to try out ICS. When it comes to Xperia™ PLAY, we do know that some games will need to be optimised to work fine with ICS. Of course, big parts of the work with games are already initiated, and we work close with several game partners on this. However, we would still like to get additional input from you, to get your opinion on how the content and games work on your Xperia PLAY.

We are especially interested in how the gaming experience works on ICS beta for Xperia™ PLAY, what games that work well and if there is any unexpected behaviour. Please let us know what you think once you’ve tried it out. You can submit your feedback either through the Ice Cream Sandwich beta ROM survey for Xperia™ PLAY, the Ice Cream Sandwich beta ROM for Xperia™ PLAY thread on the XDA forum, or in the comments to this blog post.

More info and links over at Sony Dev zone

Downloading as I post....

Xperia Play Officially out of the ICS race:

Update on Ice Cream Sandwich rollout for Xperia™ smartphones

Hello everyone. We’d like to bring you up to speed with recent developments in our Android 4.0 software rollout.

First up, the rollout plans for the Xperia NXT series (Xperia S, Xperia P and Xperia U) are progressing as planned. The first smartphone to be upgraded will be Xperia S, starting from the end of June. Then Xperia P will follow, whilst Xperia U will receive it a little later in Q3. As always we will keep you in the loop with the latest info as soon as we can.

For our 2011 range, as you know, we began our Ice Cream Sandwich software upgrade with Xperia arc S, Xperia ray and Xperia neo V last month.
Now, we are happy to confirm that the remaining 2011 smartphones; Xperia arc, Xperia neo, Xperia mini, Xperia mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active and Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman will start to receive their updates starting from next week.

This software upgrade will be Android version 4.0.4 and the good news is that this latest version will also be made available for Xperia arc S, Xperia ray and Xperia neo V users, who received Android 4.0.3 the first time around.
In regards to Xperia PLAY, after extensive in house testing with our developer teams and working with our partners, we have concluded that a consistent and stable experience, particularly with gaming, cannot be guaranteed for this smartphone on Ice Cream Sandwich – therefore, we will not make the Android 4.0 upgrade available for Xperia PLAY.

This decision was also verified when we received similar feedback from the developer community; both experienced developers and advanced users, along with game content providers following our ICS beta ROM for unlocked Xperia PLAY smartphones.
Our priority has and always will be, to provide the best possible user experience on Xperia smartphones. In this instance the ICS upgrade would have compromised stability, where we look to ensure a quality gaming experience with games optimized and developed for Xperia PLAY.

As always, feel free to drop us a comment or question below.

Sad to see this, but totally understandable esp seeing how bad the leaked ROM performed. Hopefully with more time and efford the XDA team can do something about it, if not hope we get an updated Xperia Play 2 soon.

I am not ecstatic about it, but totally understand that they could not get it stable. Only reason I was hoping to get ICS on my Play was for speed and if that doesnt happen I rather not have it, besides there is not much that ICS brings to the table in the form of functionality and in my primary use of the device this doesnt get affected.

Oh and seeing that I own a Xperia S, I rather them not waste time on something that doesn't work and bring ICS for my S out sooner.
