Never owned a PSP but looking at the specs I would say it must be equal if not better

PSP
CPU: PSP CPU (System clock frequency 1~333MHz)
Main Memory: 32MB
Display: 4.3 inch, 16:9 widescreen TFT LCD, 480 x 272 pixel

Xperia Play
CPU: 1GHz Scorpion processor, Adreno 205 GPU, Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon
Main Memory: 400 MB, 512 MB RAM
Display: 4.0 inches, LED-backlit LCD, capacitive touchscreen, 480 x 854 pixels

I am sure you can get an idea of the FX if you go look around on youtube.

Example Deadspace or this review of the device or another showing both Xperia and PSP

All PSPs since the PSP phat have 64MB main memory and you would be hard pressed to find a PSP phat today, most people keep them since they are easier to mod. Also while the technical specifications of the Xperia Play are way superior to the PSP their are other considerations as well, the android OS has been known to be quite hungry ecspecially for RAM on the other hand the simple OS on the PSP uses almost no system rescources, also thier is a lot to be said for optimizing a game for a particular platform as I understand it the PSP suite will be available on a variety of devices {Link: http://phandroid.com/2011/11/10/playstation-suite-sdk-now-in-beta-accepting-applications/ } while the PSP is only one system and the resolution on the roughly same sized screens are way different 480x272 vs 854x480. That said I own a psp not an Xperia play so maybe I am a little biased but I still play my psp often these days {mainly for JRPG's and PSone titles} and I am sometimes amazed at the graphics the ancient system can produce.

The PS Suite games will only be available on Playstation certified devices so I am sure that will sort out the fragmentation problems.

As for your love of PS one titles thats why I love the Xperia Play, you can either use the Playstation store to buy the games R50 each or use the app I linked in the 1st post to convert your games to play them on the device also having access to other emulators like Gensoid, Gameboid, GBCoid, N64oid, Nesoid, Snesoid and FPse

I heard {not sure if it's true} the games from the playstation suite are much better, I mean I have FPse {galaxy s2} and while some games work well some really just don't work at all. Anyway I keep my psp around for that I just got FPse because I wanted to see it's potential, also got all the other emulators but I do feel bad getting games for them since I don't legally own any copies and I own disc copies of most of the PSone games I get. Gotta love sony for the playstation system so many great RPG's to play.

I only bought Wipeout so far to test the PlayStation store and see if it works for SA and it does play really smooth.

I have not installed any other emulators, dont think I will need to in the near future either... got waaaay to many games on the device already. Its just good to know people have that option. As for the view on legal copies that's why I linked a conversion program so people can convert there own disks instead of pointing to sites to get the converted titles.

PS: Dam you for having a decent phone... I will have to wait till end of Feb before I can upgrade my DHD to a Droid RAZR :(

I got used to converting my PSX games for my PSP back in the day already but I'm talking more about SNES, NES, GBA exct. A lot of abononware sites seem to think it's OK to download them for roms but I found a site which allows you to download chrono trigger for super nintendo but I see it's still being sold on PSN as a PSN game for PSP, I can't imagine it's legal to download the ROM in this case so I just ended up buying it instead plus you get official support.

I have a decent phone for NOW, it's one of the saddest things about jumping on the android bandwagon when I had an iphone it was always good with maybe 1 better version available but with android I only picked up my galaxy s2 about a month ago and I am already looking longingly at phones like the rumoured HTC edge, other quad core phones early next year.

Gotta agree so many gaming options for androids, I'm just happy I found GemRB most useful program ever for dungeons and dragons fans like myself.

Not an Exclusive or free but it is a must have Xperia Play optimized title.

Paid(R45.00) Shadogun https://market.android.com/details?id=com.madfingergames.shadowgun

I bought it for my Tablet some time ago but they recently made it available for most phones. I was glad to see that they used the same market entry for Xperia/Tegra and normal devices, allowing me to install it on my phone without paying again.

Oh and while you at it, check out the studio's other title Samurai II : Vengeance now at half the price. I bought and finished it on my tablet, was not going to pay again just to see what the phone version looks like, but if its anything like the tablets game play I would highly recommend it.

The vast majority of snes games and even psx games can be downloaded from rom sites free and legally. Just a few games, like chrono trigger and some others are protected. I'm assuming it is because the developers are still making money off those games.

A good site to download rom games from is http://www.romhustler.net. They only host games that are legal to download. Although other games are in the list, when you click the download button, it'll tell you that the game is ESR protected, or something along those lines, and is not available to download.

if you want a protected game, buy it :)

No all SNES and PSX games are still covered by copyright and it's still illegal to download them, don't be fooled by that 24 hour crap rom sites give you. Even NES and and Atari 2600 games are still illegal to download. There's no such thing as abandonware and copyrights last for billions of years.

Ok let me rephrase what I said.

When it comes to downloading roms, what's legal and what's not legal?

Games that is ESA protected (got the acronym right now), is not legal to download. Publishers and developers who are not ESA members, but are still in business, can still enforce copywrite on their games and sue those who host games and possibly the downloaders too.

Hope that clears it up.

Good news for Xperia Owners on Vodacom.

Vodacom just released the 4.0.2.a.0.42 OTA update for Sony Ericsson Xperia. This update will bring the phone up to 2.3.4 with a few minor add-on's. If you on another SP, you can always borrow someone's SIM to update your phone.

  • Panoramic camera
  • Facebook inside Xperia
  • Video support in Google Chat
  • Menu update under Sony Ericsson
  • Swipe Text input
  • Build in Screenshot function
  • Back-up ability
  • New Widgets
  • and other cosmetic changes like Icons and screen wake animations

For a more details review you can click here

Warning: if your phone is rooted, unroot before applying the OTA. If rooted it is highly recommended you use the Manual update using Flashtool and Generic UK rom instead.

Just FYI guys:

Manufacturer will not be able to secure further stock due to manufacturing constraint. Will be discontinued until further notice.

If you were looking at getting this on contract from Vodacom you are out of luck for now.

Odd. It doesn't use the 8MP Censor which has had it's priority chaged to flasgships and the iPhone4S preventing it being assigned to the middle class and thus preventing more of those phones being made so I don't see why there should be a constraint.
