Just been reading the review of the Sony Xperia Play over at Endgadget

I wonder if the device will ever make South Africa and if it does what will happen with the games market on it. Here is hoping that it does esp seeing that the Playstation portable software is available to other manufacturers like say HTC to come with there own versions of a gaming phone.

Maybe this will pave the way for a market where we can legally buy games for our phones, at the end if it doesn't, there is always emulators.

******UPDATE: added info as time goes on*****

Specs: http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_xperia_play-3608.php

Full info on how to root can be found Here with instructions on how to flash CyanogenMod. I must add it is great to see OEM's come to the party.

NOTE: If you flash a custom ROM like CM 7.1, you will lose the free games that come with the phone.

If you keep stock OS or get the Official PlayStation application on your custom mod you can look at This cool app to convert your old PSX games to be able to run them on your phone.

The Phone comes with a load of free games pre-installed/Free to download

Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior from Digital Legends (pre-installed)
FIFA 2010 from EA Mobile (pre-installed)
Sims 3 from EA Mobile (pre-installed)
Star Battalion from Gameloft (pre-installed)
Tetris from EA mobile (pre-installed)
Asphalt 6 from Gameloft (free to download)
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 from EA mobile (free to download)
Guitar Hero 6 from EA mobile (free to download)
Dead Space from EA mobile (Free to download)
Need for Speed Shift from EA mobile (free to download)
Need for Speed Hot Pursuit from EA mobile (free to download)
Galaxy on fire 2 From Fishlabs (Free to download) till 1st January 2012

Also a complete list of games that is optimized with for the device can be found here

The 400 Mb space on the phone just not enough for your games?
Go check http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16171876&postcount=6 best is you dont need to root.

Been playing around with Tiger Arcade (mame), then went into the settings and realized this app a screaming for this phone.. it even has the option to use the controls already.

The moment this phone comes out I am buying it.... I probably wont touch the playstation crap on it seeing that all the emulators are prepping for it already as well as the normal Android games like all the Gameloft's games.

Nexro Thread ftw !!!

So yesterday I got my Sony Xperia Play, picked up for R2000 on a Special I must say I am actually impressed with the little device. I bought it mainly for developing purpose, well mainly to replace my old HTC Desire as a test platform and it was worth it.

Oh and seeing that I made the 1st post I guess I'll update it with some info about the device :)

I'll be getting this on my upgrade in december to replace my crapberry.

@Elementals: Among the games optimised for this device, how does the graphics compare to the PSP? Seeing a lot of people calling it the "playstation phone"

Well I have a crapload of Gameloft titles and here I must say they are awesome. EA's BF:BC2 looks ok but not as good as Rainbow six. I haven't tested many of the other games.

Maybe later I'll give a list of all the ones I have + screenshots.

You can always go check out youtube for example

Oooh thanx to the thread of optimized games I found on comment about Getjar gold games. All you need to do is install the Getjar app store. Oh and the Free applications is not a Xperia exclusive as you can even get Fruit Ninja THD for Tablets for free.

Free Optimized games:
Super KO Boxing Fighting
Muffin Knight Platform
Age of Zombies Top-Down Zombi shooter
Guns n Glory Tower Defence
Hockey Nations Ice Hokey
Backbreaker American Football

Non optimized free games
Mortal Skies Shooter
GRave Defense HD Tower defense
Orbital Puzzle shooter.
Wisp Platform

Highly recommended to pick up the following free applications in there
Splashtop Remote Remote desktop control
Beautiful Widgets Themed widgets for your device.

And no its not pirated software, they are fully legal and using the free game option to attract customers simular to Amazon's Free app of the day as per Slashgear review.

OK so I restored my back-up.

CM is nice and all but cant find a way to install the Free games that came with the device :(

So maybe when I finished Dead Space, Battlefield BC2 and the other games I'll flash again.

Can't you extract the apk and install on CM?

Nope, even tried to restore it from my titanium back-up. Also no help from cyanogenMod or XDA forums.

I did get a way to install the Playstation suite and access the PlayStation store. Also all the EA titles asked me to purchase the game when you try and run them vs Stock that just enters.

So I will go back to custom once I finished the games.

Bummer... I am still tempted getting the Play myself, but the fact that I never seem to have time for games these days is what keeps stopping me :)

Well I am just full of crap, I could just buy the 5 games that is affected for R20 each but yeah.

I see the Arc is now also getting PlayStation certified guess with the Sony buyout of Ericson it will not be long for all the SE models to sport the feature.

Dam my timeing could not have been better, just got my phone yesterday and Sony opened applications for the new Beta SDK today

As per http://androidcommunity.com/devs-can-apply-for-playstation-suite-sdk-closed-beta-now-20111110/

Devs can apply for PlayStation Suite SDK closed beta now

If you are a game developer for Android games that has been looking to get your games onto more devices the new PlayStation Suite SDK has hit the closed beta point. The PS suite SDK is the development environment using C# that allows games to be run on PS certified devices including Android smartphones as well as the PS Vita portable console that will be landing soon.

Sony has announced that it is now accepting apps from individual developers and corporate devs for the SDK closed beta. Like any other closed beta, not all devs will gain access to the beta program. The SDK that Sony has developed will run on a virtual C# machine that is part of the Vita portable and PS Certified Android devices.

The program will be open to devs in the US, UK, and Japan in English. The SDK used in the beta will work on 32-but Windows XP and 32 or 64-bit Windows 7. The SDK comes with a PC simulator and the purchase of a PS Vita or other device isn’t required.
