So I thought I would share my experience, and an honest review of the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact.
Initially I loved the phone. I Liked the fact that it was a “small” phone, but packed loads of features. Good camera, great processor, and the phone just felt like a superior phone! I ran the most demanding apps with ease. From time to time, I had issues were calls dropped, and clients complaining that they couldn’t get hold of me seeing that the phone went straight to voicemail. I changed the mobile data to only use GSM, and that seemed to solve the issue of the dropped calls.
Ultimately, I was very satisfied with the phone, and rather pleased that I decided to go for the Xperia instead of the Iphone. With the huge price difference, and difference in specs, it just made sense.
But then, just over two weeks of having the phone, I was devastated. I took the phone out my pocket one evening, and noticed that the screen and digitizer was completely broken. Rather confused, I decided to Google what happened, and to my surprise I found that there were several people in the same boat as me, from all over the world. I then took the phone back to MTN the following day, and explained to them what happened. I showed them the device, and that there were no signs off physical damage. The sales representative was very helpful, and agreed that it indeed seemed like a manufacturing defect. They then promised that they would write a huge report to the supplier and get it sorted for me.
Now before I get someone that is going to start flaming me, saying I dropped the phone or stepped on it or something stupid, I would like to inform you that my phone is insured, so I’m not looking for a free fix. Being in the IT industry, I have also owned several mobile devices, and broken plenty of screens before. (HTC Desire HD, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Asus Transformer PRIME, HTC One, all of which I took the blame for braking the screen and got insurance to cover me)
I then decided to do even more research and to my surprise, the reports of broken screens just kept coming. The one thing that bothered me was that Sony, refused to acknowledge that there is an issue with the phone, and advertise the phone as (and I quote) : “Construction : Durable Tempered glass display”

In South Africa alone, I found a large amount of people complaining on hellopeter regarding the issues with the cracked screens on the Xperia Z series.

Another thing that really bothered me, is that Sony UK, after appearing on a BBC TV Show called watchdogs, admitted to certain screen issues. While Sony in SA seem a bit behind

On youtube I found another guy with a cracked screen and he explains what the problem is. Sony also did not want to fix his phone, and only after he threatened with small claims, did they agree to replace the screen

I am currently busy with Sony, and have launched a complaint with them. This is a matter of principle for me, as I feel there are a lot of consumers out there that have had a similar experience, and also just want Sony to acknowledge the issue, and fix it. I don’t want an iphone, I am perfectly happy with my Xperia, I just want them to fix the issue, and give me the phone as it was advertised.
It has been almost a month since my phone broke, and I will keep up to date with the responses I get from Sony, (the feedback I got from MTN was shocking to say the least, pathetic).
Feel free to comment
