Sony Xperia Z2

So, I have more faith in Sony's upgrade policy than Samsung's. Oon top of it, custom firmware will be considerably more stable and useable on the Xperia line than the Galaxy range (more open chipset and handset manufacturers).

I agree with you, Sony's launcher is much more stock Android than Samsung's Touchwiz.

So Sony should not take long to offer Android software upgrades when it becomes available.

The Z2 is an incredible device, although an updated Z1 (similar to the Galaxy S4 -> S5), they responded appropriately to consumer complaints (and negative experiences) and thoroughly addressed them with this release. Now only to wait upon the productive reviews, to hear what the user experience is like, this will ultimately distinct the two competitive (S5 vs. Z2) devices.

I already see the S5 biometrics scanner come under debate due to it not being up to 5S standards…

On Updates, My Xperia S got an update about 2 or so months back.

They update newer phones first but it seems to filter down to older models as well :)

Also, seems this is going to be great timing for my next upgrade :D

But will it get 4.4 aka Kitkat?

I do not presume so:

4.4 : Z, ZL, ZR, SP, Z Ultra, Z1
4.3 : T, TX, V

The above will also include the model variations in line with the same model, many which is "mini" and dual-SIM versions which was only available in certain parts Asia (and some in the US).

No idea.

In a couple of months it will not matter though I think.

Still considering what it will do in it's next life though.
Some form of remote or media centre I guess (as it has an hdmi port just add a powered USB hub, keyboard/mouse and some external drives, plays 1080p quite well).

As long as it isn't their mid-range phones Sony seems to keep the relatively updated. Even though they are still offering the Go they haven't updated it past 4.1.2 their excuse is the chipset is no longer supported. The modding community has gotten a pretty successful kitkat rom working and I am using that on my Xperia P which has the same chipset. Also Vodacom is slow on pushing updates or just stops so will probably be my last Vodacom phone.

After the rather dismal S5 showing I'm very impressed by what I've seen of the Z2 so far. Not only are the specs right up there but the device really looks sleek and well built (something I was hoping for in the S5).

I think Sony has a potential S5 killer on their hands here and if the battery life is decent this phone will be my next upgrade.

The Z2 is definitely the more premium device, would be my choice as well.

If you look at where the NovaThor chipset ended up, though, you can see why Sony stopped development for it.

There is now a great dilemma between the Z2 and S5 chipsets, as believed with the announcements:

Galaxy S5 - Snapdragon 800 (with overclocked processor 2.3GHz -> 2.5GHz)
Xperia Z2 - Snapdragon 801 (clocked Adreno 330)

Now we have this assumption:

http://techivian.com/samsung-galaxy-s5s-snapdragon-800-faster-sony-xperia-z2s-801/

Qualcomm’s confusing nomenclature created quite a confusion yesterday when Sony announced the Xperia Z2 with a Snapdragon 801, while the Galaxy S5 was still packing a Snapdragon 800. Most of us thought that the processor on the Xperia Z2 was better than Galaxy S5′s S800.Turns out we were wrong, with many others.

A deeper dig into Qualcomm’s documentation reveals that the Galaxy S5′s Snapdragon 800 is actually the Snapdragon 801, while that of the Sony Xperia Z2, is still the Snapdragon 800. Sound’s confusing? Give us a chance to explain.

Last year’s Snapdragon 800 which can be seen on devices like the LG G2 and the Xperia Z Ultra is model number MSM8974. This particular version comes with four Krait 400 cores clocked at 2.3GHz. The Adreno 330 GPU is clocked at 450MHz, while the ISP frequency maxes out at 320MHz. the memory on the chip is of DDR3 variety, clocked in at 1,600MHz.

Now, the recently announced Xperia Z2 still comes with a Snapdragon 800, although it’s second generation. Model number MSM8974AB, the processor comes with the same Krait 400 cores at 2.3GHz, but the GPU clock has been raised to 550MHz. ISP frequency also gets a boost to 465MHz, while the memory chip is now clocked at 1,866MHz.

Finally, the MSM8974AC found in the Galaxy S5 the actual Snapdragon 801, with a clock speed of 2.5GHz on Krait 400 cores. Other things remaining similar to MSM8974AB, the GPU clock is set at 578MHz and the eMMC interface on the chip is 5.0, instead of 4.5 on the other two.

So, the Galaxy S5′s has the Snapdragon 801 that for some reason being called Snapdragon 800 by Samsung, and Xperia Z2′s Snapdragon 801 is actually the Snapdragon 800, unless Qualcomm decides to call MSM8974AB the Snapdragon 801 as well. We hope that should clear stuff up.

I see that other articles state the Galaxy S5 to possess the Snapdragon 805 chipset which will only enter mass production this quarter (Q1 2014). Which will have 4 Krait 450 cores supporting up to 2.7GHz clock speed and the new Adreno 420 GPU.

Currently I don't know should the above be the Samboys ultimate strike against the Z2, but should it be true then the S5 is the better option at this time being in regards with hardware... can't really see 3GB memory play a huge role in a smartphone.

I believed that Sony contained the latest Snapdragon 801 (MSM 8974 AC) with the GPU clocked at 578MHz and standard CPU clock due to temperature reasons.

So why did Sony announce the Z2 with a Snapdragon 801 and why did Samsung announce the S2 with a Snapdragon 800?

The Snapdragon 800 is already crazy fast, so that is not important to me.

I would definitely choose the 3GB RAM phone, as you can never have too much RAM....and not all 3GB RAM is available to the user.

A dealbreaker for me is the display, and here Sony has pulled off a miracle.

I would rather go for the Z2 for 2 simple reasons.

It's waterproof
It looks better
