The Snapdragon 800 is already crazy fast, so that is not important to me.

I would definitely choose the 3GB RAM phone, as you can never have too much RAM....and not all 3GB RAM is available to the user.

A dealbreaker for me is the display, and here Sony has pulled off a miracle.

I agree, the only thing with 3GB memory is pushing the phone with apps, this is on a whole other level as it comes down to user experience.

My concern is the misconception with the chipset announcements, which is really interesting to me. It also seems the Samsung S5 is not the phone that Samsung wanted to release now, also with the shortened release cycle. I might be right with my speculation that they will head with the Tizen association (https://www.tizenassociation.org/) in Q3/Q4 which will be the probable release date entailing the S6 on 64-bit (ARM-based Exynos) architecture.

On the side though, I see that Intel wants to challenge QNX based in-car entertainment systems with Tizen, they already have an agreement with Land Rover.

So why did Sony announce the Z2 with a Snapdragon 801 and why did Samsung announce the S2 with a Snapdragon 800?

Not sure why, unless Sony confused the 8974AB chipset as the 801, and Samsung still saw the 8974AC as 800. The 801 is basically a 2.5Ghz bin of the 8974 in any event.

Reminds me of the Snapdragon S4 line, where the S4 Pro found in the Nexus 7 2013 was so similar to the Snapdragon 600, to the point of it simply being an underclocked version, for all intents and purposes.

FYI, for anyone that is interested- Anandtech have, as always, done a comparison between the 800 and 801.

EDIT: Seems that Qualcomm themselves list the Z2 as packing the 801 chipset. Weird, no wonder the manufacturers are confused...

I see that no one has mentioned this here yet- but the Z2 has front facing stereo speakers, ala HTC One. This is a rather huge improvement over the crappy little speaker that the Z1 has.

Will be lekker to watch DSTV Drifta or a movie on a desktop stand with the stereo speakers.

Had a call from Vodacom concerning my impending upgrade date this morning. I was asked which phone I wanted and indicated that my first choice is the Z2, failing that the S5 (assuming the Sony phone is delayed). The consultant responded that neither phone was available yet (obviously), but a little surprisingly they did not know their stock allocations, nor the date of stock arrival and wouldn't allow me to book a Z2 before release either.

Yup, the consultants are always the last to know.

I'm very curious what the Z2 will cost in SA. Saw in the UK the Z2 costs 505 pounds, while the S5 is 499.

With new screen technology employed on the Z2 will it have the same bright vibrancy the high end samsungs do? I dont care much about the accuracy but i do like the brightness of samsungs screens...

from the early reviews, the Z2 has apparently a better display than the S5.

In the video I posted, Erica Griffin reckons it's the best Sony display she has ever seen - and she has seen a lot of mobile phone displays. :)

Didnt like to see her thoughts on the white one staining as that would be the colour i would go for. I like the combination with the black panel on the front and i would imagine white would be less problematic with finger prints, but i dont want it changing to the colour of my jeans.

Barely noticeable unless you angle the light on the back to actually look for them. Front is still black around screen so that shows slightly more obviously.

Might be hard to get a purple though, I know the Z1 was never brought in locally in purple

Howdy folks. Anyone have any idea when this phone will be available in SA? I see Samsung has put up a pre order for the S5 at MTN and Vodacom.
