Sony Z3

My Z3 compact digitizer is slowly dying. The screen works perfectly and has no scatches or cracks. At first, the top 20% of the screen stopped responding to any touch events, now the bottom row of icons is also non responsive. MTN said they'll ship it in for repairs to JHB, but that process may take 4-6 weeks!

- Has anyone had experience with mtn/sony repairs - Is this how long warranty repairs typically take?
- I do not have a backup phone - what would you recommend for a cheap phone for the interim.
- Best way to backup all my data from the device before giving it to them?

I must say this problem is unique. Bud I'll send it in. And take the punch. Not sure about a replacement

Yeah, it is getting quite frustrating to use. Cannot press the back or home buttons any more - so makes the phone very frustrating. Will be taking it in tomorrow morning...
 
I've had experience with Sony repairs back in the day. Took about 2 weeks with shipping back and forth.
 
got Marshmallow update last night on PC companion, borked Google Play Services, a bit of googling shows this seems to be common, more so on the Z5, have had to do a factory reset to fix
 
Has anyone else experienced Bluetooth problems with Marshmallow? Since 6.0.1 update it connects with my car unit (JVC) but won't play until I turn off Bluetooth and turn it on again. Worked perfectly with Lollipop. I've tried re-pairing the two, but I suspect I may have to do a factory reset.

Mine working great. I do streaming and music via bluetooth and had no problems.
 
I received an OTA firmware update : 23.5.A.1.291 for my XPERIA Z3 model D6603 and so far I am very happy with it.
Changes that I have noticed :

Stamina and Ultra Stamina battery saving modes have been added.

The Home screen now support landscape mode.

a Charging Optimisation mode have been added to extend the life of our ageing batteries by not overcharging older batteries which peak voltage have decreased. The function is on by default but if you don't like it go settings- about phone- status- Charging Optimisation, and disable.

Moving Apps to SD card is now a breeze : all the eligible Apps can now be moved with one selection by going to Settings- storage- Transfer to SD card and select.

The only thing that worries me is that the security patch is a few months old:

No Nougat update !

It appears that the Z2 and Z3 phones would not be getting any Android 7 Nougat updates. This have resulted in very unhappy Sony customers, myself included. But it now appears that this is not due to Sony's unwillingness but requirements set by Google for Android 7.0: They demand that devices cleared to run this OS must be able to do hi-speed 64 bit encryption that the Snapdragon 800-801 are not capable of doing. So no device with these chips would be certified to run Nougat. I trust we would still be getting security updates and support for the Marshmallow update....

PS this includes Samsung S5, HTC one (e8), LG G3 and Motorola Moto X (2014)
I think Google is being ridiculous and preventing some good devices from getting their update.

I broke my Xperia Z3 Compact and just bought an Xperia XA - design wise with it's the slimmest 5" phone in the world with its edge to edge bezels; performance wise it's just middling but it will get nougat.
 
I have a contract update in 2017, will see how the prices for a X looks then. But I still see no reason why they cannot release a Nougat 32bit and 64bit version, the 32bit will just have a few less features, features that I probably won't be interested in anyway.

I'm leaving Vodacom so I want to load non branded firmware. Where can I get it?
 
I had the genuine Sony firmware on mine from the start but you don't have to change your service provider because you changing your firmware!
