I live in the northern suburbs in Cape Town.

I went to my local Telkom Shop yesterday to ask about self-install.

I have checked and my exchange is ADSL ready.

So I ask the guy and he says to me self install is only available to the Southern Suburbs our lines are not ready to do the self install they need to do something on the line. (I can’t remember what he said)

So what is this other thing that needs to be done on the line. I thought you only need to have an adsl ready line and fit micro filters.....

Also he told be that install is only R202.00 and not R404.00... I wonder how true that is....

Go to Canal Walk shop - they allowed me to do a self-install after going to both Tygervalley and phoning Telkom twice...

I did however have to go twice - the first time they gave me the story above, the 2nd time a different dude ordered the self-install for me without any questions asked.

So basically, it IS possible, they just want to make some more profits. Insist on it and keep trying until you get it!

PS : My line was running in under 2 weeks from applying, and would have been quicker if it wasn't for the Telkom strike. Though I'm still awaiting the first bill...

PSS : It IS possible that a self-install is actually not available in your area - but you should still be allowed to apply for one. Telkom should phone you back in good time if a self-install is not possible. Or thats what I understood at least.

My friend lives in the northern suburbs (Edgemead) and he applied for ADSL via fax and they phoned him a week later and asked if he would rather not want a self install because then they could hook him right away.

How is this...

I phoned Tygervalley and they told me I can do the self install.....

It just proves that Telkom is out there to make money!

yeah, they told me I cant do it either... I am in Sonstraal Heights? You think they are lying...

As far as I know, the install is R202 if you sign a 24 month contract with telkom, otherwise it is R404

Dont mean to interrupt, but can some1 explain what exactly a "self-install" is supposed to mean?

Telkom actually let u touch their property?

they need a techie to enable the line - no big deal

i swear i can remember a thread a few months ago where someone said that telkom had told them that self-install was not available in the southern suburbs but only in the northern

companies are very very afraid of their customers

@PDonut - do a forum search on self-install - there is lots of good info available

Why cant you do a self-uninstall? Or a self-downgrade and avoid having to pay the fees?

I just think it proves the unbelievable miscommunication that goes on in that company...

Nobody seems to have a cooking clue what the hell is actually going on.

Up here in GP the general trend has been that self install is only available in areas where they waaaaaaaay behind on installs - like more than 3 months...

But if it will take less than 2 months to do the techie install then they refuse to let you do the self install - consipiracies abound (like above) that this is just a desperate ploy to cling onto their revenue stream and also provide a "customer centric" alternative in the disaster areas...

So i'm off to install iBurst at my parents place - reseller has modem stock so its going to take longer for me drive to them than to setup the whole connection :D

When i did my application the first thing i asked for was the self install option. After looking confused for quite a while the saleslady finally found the forms for it.

So I got the self install option but then about 2 weeks later after enquiring about the call status i get told flatly that no self install would be available for me.

I also stay in the northern suburbs. ..... bellville precisely.

The thing that got my goat was that 2 weeks prior i was helping a buddy do his self install and he only stays about a kilometre away from me.
