Hey all,

I have been looking for a smallish cheap sound system to use with my TV and some other items. I have the following:

Samsung 40" FullHD LCD
PS3
DVD Player
Media Player with composite output
Laptop with HDMI output

Currently, I am using Cambridge Soundworks 4.1 speakers for the laptop, while the rest plays via the LCD, which has very poor sound

My idea would be to get a system that handles multiple inputs (HDMI, comp, optical) and outputs one HDMI to the television.

Now I know the best idea here would be to get a component system with a decent amp/AV receiver but I cannot spend this amount right now. I was hoping that there would be some cheapie 5.1 type system out there, that can do something close to this. I have looked around, but the "computer-style" 5.1 systems don't seem to have hdmi or even optical inputs.

Please, do any of you have any ideas or suggestions?

What is your budget...

For a system to have HDMI inputs, you are more than likely looking at a component system...

Well, I was hoping on getting a set up like Logitech 530s or something similar, something cheap until I can get a complete component system together, but I suppose I am taking a chance. None of these small systems have optical or HDMI, you do get some 5.1. DVD players with optical and HDMI in, but I don't want to go for that.

If I go for a component system, what AV receiver can you recommend, with speakers? I cannot give you a budget, as I am broke (need these amounts to draw up a budget).

Sony seem to offer the best budget AMP with speaker's - I have the Sony HT-DDWG800 5.1 and paid R4500 for it, nice thing about it is it decodes the hdmi signal and doesnt' just "pass it through"
Very nice AMP with speaker setup.
GAME - House and Home have some Sony AMP system's with speakers.
