South African smartphone stats: Android vs iOS vs BlackBerry vs Windows

I don't believe that BB market share hasn't fallen.

Windows phone climbing rapidly there as well. Nice to see that.

So no growth for blackberry, I expect the next set of figures to show a decline

Vodacom can't be trusted with these stats.

Unless Vodacom are purposefully lying (can't see why they have a reason to?) the stats they can provide are far more accurate than any research house can. They actually know the make/model of every phone you connect to their network with.

So, Symbian is not a smartphone OS. Second to BB it has the hugest number of smartphones in SA.

If you are including BB7 then you should be including Symbian.

Please, next time try give us a split between BB10 & 7 and include Symbian (and other smartphone OSes).

Nevertheless, it is an article that seems like a true reflection of the direction OSes are going in general. BB is not too much appreciated, iOS is overpriced and Apple is not playing ball with operators and Windows is indeed making in roads.

Android? Well...enough said.

Not surprised Nokia has a similar hold on South Africa like Blackberry does and add a good marketing strategy you see sales. More apps needed for the Windows ecosystem though.

Should the title not be Vodacom smartphone stats?

If 'South African' as it stands then surely we need MTN,Cell C, TelkomMobile, Virgin etc.... in there as well?

If you had to buy a iPhone would you choose Vodacom? I personally know a fair number of new iPhone owners and to a man, woman, and child they all got theirs through CellC.

Agreed, It would be nice to see stats from the other providers. Some have more favourable terms on specific devices.

and the fanboy raises his head :)

not even close. I have 4 android devices and one ipad. I dont think that makes me a fanboy. But saying that vodacom never sold a single ios device in a 2month period is stupid

yes, because we all know how great cell c's signal is.

What those numbers claim is that there hasn't been any growth, nothing indicates Vodacon hasn't sold any. Contracts end end every day, people are renewing and replacing every day. Likewise it stands to reason that if Vodacon weren't selling iPhones those numbers would be decreasing.

Despite how poor you believe their signal is, around here there are people on waiting lists for iPhones from CellC.
