South Africans pirate more software

BSA... otherwise known as the Bullsh*tters Speakers Association... people actually believe a word they say? Really? REALLY?!!?!? Did not think there was anyone dumb enough the believe the garbage they spew.

"Today mein minions, we lost a billion gazillion to infinity rands to pirates, we need the armed forces, the police, the judicial system to bring to justice all the pirates, their families, printers on their networks, their budgies and friends of the budgies! Heil RIAA!"

Dirtiest bunch of thugs that have graced our beautiful South African shores. If they could charge us for air.. they would.

I wish I could be at a BSA/RISA orgy meetings and play this song really loudly: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLsJyfN0ICU

And I thought pirates were operating from Somalia:rolleyes: Next we will have the UN patrolling our waters

The issue I think is, that for the average South African, no one can afford the exorbitant price of some software that is available. For instance, someone wanting to get into graphic design, fresh out of school, or even in school for that matter, is not going to fork out R3000+ for just one graphics program. Secondly, given the average salary of a South African, how many South Africans can afford to buy a legitimate copy of Windows?

ridculous argument....open source is the true killer if you ask me...pay 1200$ for an application that do "x+y" or get the source for a program that does "x" and the source for a program that do "y", slap it together, customize and tailor it to your companies needs and whala...you have a better solution than the 1200$ program offered...and you dont need to be a programmer to do this, just to a degree understand the syntax and wrie a couple of odd lines of code....

The worldwide PC market grew fastest in high-piracy countries, therefore the worldwide piracy rate increased by three percentage points to 41% in 2008.

So increased piracy leads to increased computer adoption? How is this bad?

Just using their '1 pirated program = 1 lost sale' logic against them... :D

The software piracy rate in South Africa had been dropping consistently since 2004 when it peaked at 37%. Last year however it increased to 35% from 34%.

Mainly because piracy is linked to affordability and less people can afford legit software in a recession...

Cut prices or be pirated, simple!

Exactly.

I wonder how they actually get to these percentages. Thumb sucking?

In the Middle East and Africa region the highest reported piracy rate was Zimbabwe at 92%

Anybody from the BSA care to explain how that 92% was determined?

They need to do a study.. Pirated software rate vs effective price(in comparison to earnings of the country). I am pretty sure the curves will correspond.

so why dont you write your own then instead of stealing someones elses?

Hold on. South Africans steal from each other every day. Car's, TV's, mobile phones, software...... Stop complaining about high crime then. You are part of the problem.

Pricing is just the current, convenient excuse used by pirates. Even if pricing drops substantially, they'll still pirate. I'm sure I'll be taken up on this statement, but if you look how often low value products get pirated, it indicates that piracy is not connected to pricing.

A while ago, on this forum, there were people looking for pirated copies of something you had to pay R5 for on the MXiT network.

I find it interesting that these pirates are quite happy to buy all their hardware instead of stealing it. So paying a couple of thousand for a PC or laptop is fine. But when it comes to the OS and apps making all that hardware actually do something, suddenly 'pricing' is now an issue.

Clearly it is rather an issue of "I can steal software and get away with it, but can't easily steal hardware."

So to justify the theft of software, pricing in now suddenly the problem.

Someone above posted that a young, budding graphics designer can't afford R3K for a design package. Really? He / she probably spent R10K on the latest desktop.

Pirates pirate because they can. And because they somehow deem theft of a non-physical product OK. While stealing a real, physical object is actually wrong (cars, PC's, etc.)

But they do feel a hint of guilt, thus the warped justifications for breaking the law we keep on seeing on this and other forums.

I have a confession to make... This morning I pirated a copy of Ubuntu 9.04 :p

Can i give you guys a little insight, look at our country as example of high pricing for instance, imagine nobody pirated what would stop cd's being 500 bucks and dvd's 1k, games for 2k software 5 x as much?

We keep you legal okes paying very little compared to what you would be paying if we did not pirate. Take console games as a prime example, it is hard to pirate on them because they are expensive and the chip voids your warranty, you can see piracy is low if you look at the pricing. 700 bucks a game compared to pc games which get pirated like crazy for 350.

See stealing hardware means someone loses out, stealing software it has cost nobody anything, so i am not sure how you consider them the same :).

That just means he spent 10k on the computer instead of R13K. He should have spent only 7K so he could afford the software as well, but people don't think that way. They spend the money they have in hand.
