South Africans suck at driving

I don't understand why South Africa, in general, has consistently ignored this stat for decades:

"South Africa has the highest amount of alcohol-related road traffic deaths, at 57.5%"

Drunk driving is a culture across all cultures; alcohol advertising gets a total free pass, and the education around alcohol consumption and drunk driving is so lame it doesn't touch the sophistication of alcohol campaigns.
 
The majority of people on our roads have never learned the rules of the road, how can you expect them to obey something they don't even realise exists!

Part of your qualifications to get a license should be to at least have an IQ of 80 - that already would invalidate about 80% of drivers on SA roads!

If you spend enough time driving in township areas or busy villages, you just pick it up.

Drinking is part of South Africa's culture. Period. Everything else that follows is just part of drinking as you can't expect a drunk person to think clearly.

Its the lack of enforcement. The lack of law on the road.
Do we need more road laws... No, we have enough. Just enforce them.
Look around. How many cars drive over stop streets. How many cars drive over robots. And the list at traffic infringement goes on.
Tell me, how many knows that you can't stop, or even park in a turn? If I remember correctly, that is a R700 fine.
Driving in the emergency lane on the highway, Left side is also R700, double that for the right hand side. Been a while since I saw the listed fines on the ARTO website.
Oh yea... Minibus taxis is the biggest culprit, but they are by far not the only ones.
Sometimes this happens in front of JMPD, and nothing gets done.
This brings reminds me of a stories I heard that JMPD does not have fine books.
What about the normal Police then? Nope, they don't have jurisdiction in traffic infringements.
The legal system in SA is so fractured that you have to get the right type of cop.

In short, The roads are lawless, some people do what they want and get away with it sometimes right in front of traffic enforcement.
It's compounded with mismanagement, corruptions and poor maintenance.
I dare people to go dive like they do in SA in the US.

They actually enforce the traffic rules in the US.
 
I am one of the few who went on formal driver training at a major driving school, passed my test fairly, and then went on to advanced training. The first time I drove in Europe I suddenly realized that I still had a lot to learn about how to behave on the road. Their lower accident rate is due to a lot more factors than the generally lower speed limits.

Another big difference in the US: You have to carry proof of insurance in your vehicle. When you are pulled over, you have to produce it and your driver's license. Also if you f**k around and get a ticket for a "moving violation", your insurance co will find out, then on your next renewal, it will either decline or raise your premium. Consequences, bru, serious consequences. Here?

The question I'd ask in relation to that stat is how many of the road traffic deaths that relate to alcohol are pedestrians?

The number of okes I see stumbling around during the day that are absolutely po3sdronk and step into the road randomly and shyte is still mind blowing.
 
South Africans are stupid, that could be the only explanation. And I can't even pin point one group, it comes from all groups. People jumping red lights, blindly, on a daily basis. The only enforcement is cameras all over the place.

Most cameras don't even work anymore.

I know of 3 in Durban that don't actually have cameras in them anymore.

I'm in Stellenbosch, and I can assure you that they work here. In fact, they get moved around all day.
 
The stupidity manifests as self-importance and selfishness. They're incapable of understanding their impact on the environment and people around them, everything is focussed on the self and what the self wants to do. Somewhat strangely, self-preservation doesn't enter the situation as they're unable to think ahead in terms of consequences.
