South Africa's best and worst ISPs

MyBroadband has released its Q1 2020 broadband and ISP report, which shows that Cybersmart, Supersonic, and Cool Ideas are the best Internet service providers in South Africa.

The report is based on 42,858 customer satisfaction ratings from South African broadband users between 1 January and 31 March 2020.
 
Well, Telkom are loosing it badly, am on ADSL, the performance of which is less than stellar.

On LTE-A, I can get faster downloads, but gaming and streaming is not any better. Beside being a **** load more expensive.
 
Vox excluded again? The trend is getting quite amusing now and it really does not do the credibility of these articles any good.
 
Telkom last and falling, so glad I got out of there. With Afrihost and using LTE, so much faster overall and less service fails. Even better is the MTN tower has both redundant fibre and working batteries, unlike the old Vodacom/Cell C tower, which had none of these.

Now I can use a clock to resolve issues, not a calendar.

Telkom will always be last not because they are doing anything wrong it's because people rate ADSL bad. If you have a bad slow copper line with Telkom ISP you will rate 1 star. Use that same data account and a 200/100Mbps Openserve fibre line and it's like a different ISP. So unfortunately most will rate 1 or 2 stars incorrectly their issue is related the copper.

Then there is the LTE. Poor performing areas or congested areas where people use Telkom LTE as home broadband and do speedtest over ethernet cable will be included in these results because Telkom uses the same network for everything but the last mile is bad the connection will be bad.

These are issues Telkom sits with that ISPs like Cool Ideas, Supersonic and Cybersmart does not.
 
Rain 5G LTE (well in reception area) is right now running at ,34 Mbps. That's a comma before the M.
Later today for times it will be late 20's yes. But it will at times be totally internet dead as well.
Fortunately I have another router with a Telkom prepaid sim in for serious situations. It also is dead or close to dead at times. But mostly they don't overlap.
Fukin South Africa. Post colonial backwater on the slide...

Telkom are very much aware of the problems, but are not doing much, to fix, those problems. Therefore they will continue taking stick for them.

That's the way the cookie crumbles.
 
Considering Cybersmart are not passing on a free speed upgrade from fibre providers to their customers should definitely have an impact on Cybersmart's rating.
 
As usual a well deserved last for telscum which should be in the top three but nope it's pricing etc sucks big time.

This is not correct. I think Cybersmart has done the most out of all ISPs regarding upgrades, which include free Openserve (ADSL and fibre data), upgrades on Vuma, upgrades on its own network and price cuts.

This is definitely a business model we should consider :)

To date we have just used a list of the most prominent ISPs, many of which we have no commercial relationship with. The list is partly based on the number of votes the ISP receive. There are also some technical reasons, like IP addresses which do not show the ISP name, which exclude ISPs. Webafrica is a good example.

We always receive requests from ISPs to be included, but it is not possible to include everyone.

It was said in jest but not a bad idea. That's kinda how site performance/visit stuff work anyway, right? If you're not using Effective Measure it you're not included.

Would be interesting to see a full list of ISPs collected via the speed test and how they rank and how popular they are.

That will indeed be interesting - We may work on that if we have time. The main challenge is to split ISPs from companies. All we have are names based on IP ranges. There are hundreds or even thousands.

Even ISPs have many different names, often not the same as their trading name. Luckily the big ones are easy to identify.
