Even worse is the fixation on total infections... which due to the reinfections basically means zero.

The other problem is that the entire country is at different stages of the "wave" so looking at total new infections for the entire country also makes less sense.
Which also perfectly explains why the graph is plateauing. First Gauteng peaked, then Western cape, then eastern Cape and KZN.

Don't forget the total infections has been over an almost 2 year span. If this was truly about waves, you measure from the start of the wave or the season.

New case increases tend to reflect in increased hospitalisations with a 1 to 2 week delay.
 
So basically it's no longer coming in waves. Or with previous waves the cases dropped after lockdown was eased. This time they're not easing the lockdown so cases are no longer dropping.

So ideally, once their is sufficient immunity via vaccination or infection, and assuming we can be on top of it, surely in the near future we can stop testing and just deal with the sick?

No more lockdowns, isolation etc. Just another seasonal virus that needs to be catered for

Yes once we've achieved critical mass in vaccinations there should be no more need to really track infections. And actual demand for tests will drop off as people won't feel sick to need to test or any treatment

The 'endemic endgame' has been on the cards from pretty early on. The vaccine is crucial to that, we have it now.

WC in particular always want to show off that they so awesome compared to GP and then proceed to show that they way, way worse per capita.

It’s hilarious.. keep in mind I’m from Cpt when living in Jhb I’ve realized that Cpt people have a stick up their arse. I just find it hilarious that people do this over and over from UCT “specialists” to Groote Schuur medical specialists.. I just just rofl over and over..

Wife says people in Cpt suffer big brother syndrome.. no one from Jhb/Pta keeps telling people they from there.. but Cpt people do often.

Yup, it's per capita that you've got to look at, as I was told but look at one point Gauteng hit 16 000, WC is only hitting 4 to 5k. I'm like yeah but it's 3 times smaller then GP so per capita you're not doing so well.
