SouthTel Push VOD:TV launch has been delayed

Wahahaha,... and we didn't see this coming.. ever... promise.

I'm glad they're ironing out their issues before launch. However we need them soon to break the stranglehold on the market. Also, I hope they have some sort of computer-based, one-off option where you can just download and watch a movie when you feel-like, with ISPs offering un-capped access to the host servers.

And I hope to win the Lotto and Powerball this weekend. :)

Please can someone explain this:

Does Southtel not need a broadcasting license from ICASA similar to ODM/TopTV, DSTV, eTV etc?

I dont recall ICASA publishing an invitation for a new license? Last invitation was when ODM/TopTV, Telkom media etc.. won.

Can anyone just set up a business like this?

Please could some shed some light on this for me.

Many Thanks!

Would be nice if they could publish a few photos of the interface. All I ever see is the one in the news post which is in another language.

Surprise, surprise...

When they first announced this service they said they would have 5million subscribers within 5 - 8 years. Currently there are maybe 9 million TV households in SA, of that MultiChoice has about 2.5m. Of the remaining 6.5m, the majority consists of low income households with little disposable income for entertainment services.
And to get this VOD service you will have to pay R200 pm for content that is probably second rate, and then another R40 for every blockbuster or current TV series that you want to unlock. And there is no sport.
I'm not surprised at the delay. If they ever successfully get off the ground I will be surprised as little thought seems to have gone into this venture.
