Hey Guys

I want to know something regarding audio through a 5.1 setup, whereby the tv doesnt have optical/coax, but only HDMI port, and 3.5mm hedaphone jack and the normal RCA ports.

The system i intend to use has a Coax and Optical inputs, but no HDMI.

Is there a way to get some type of converter to go from the speaker system into the tv's HDMI on the tv. Its not HDMI out, so im going to guess this wont work.

Any suggestions? If i have a media player with a coax or optical port, can the speaker system go via the media player, then HDMI in from media player to tv?

Any advice?

The media player with the coax/optical port will work.

HDMI from media player to TV.
COAX or OPTICAL PORT from media player into audio of 5.1 amplifier.

So you can use either amplifier with 5.1 sound, or just switch off amp and turn the sound up on the TV.

Hope that helps.

Yes to that...applies to any source device that has HDMI and TOSLINK. You can send the picture over HDMI and the audio over TOSLINK. TOSLINK doesn't support some forms of Dolby (TrueHD?) but it does work for multi-channel audio.

TOSLINK comes in handy for those situations where you don't want to turn the TV on...music / radio mainly.

cheers guys, appreciate the replies. At least i dont have to go buy an expensive tv with all these fancy ports now.

That should work. But then only the stuff on the media player will be 5.1. Does the media player support 5.1 out?

I bought this off Roux on here.

So im hoping it does. Will see when i set up.

Either you move the HDMI cable between the media player and the xbox depending on what you want to use or get a splitter switch combo: http://avsupply.co.za/product_info....tcher-with-toslink-digital-coaxial-port-p-671

How would this splitter work. Im assumig the Xbox and media player HDMI into this splitter, and one into TV. Then the sound from the speakers optical into the splitter box optical, and then i just switch using the remote of the splitter between the various devices?

okay i made a bad diagram of my setup i intend to try and use. Im hoping it can be done this way.

Basically Im assuming the above splitter is what i would need for something like this, without having to switch HDMI cables manually between the Xbox and Media player, in order to get sound from the 5.1 speakers.

The diagram I posted is what you will setup. Media Player and xbox go into the splitter. Splitter goes out to TV and speakers.

You're in Cape Town so why don't you phone avsupply. I'm sure he'll be happy to help and may even be able to do a demo.
