If you had R50 000 and your brief was to create a single machine rendering machine for Maya. What would you use?

I am thinking two Xeons with loads of memory.

Yup for sure, antowan do you think putting 2 velociraptors 300gb versions in raid would also be a good thing? i would imagine with raptors low seek time and raid config it would smash any other hard drive config.

Final/Post Rendering or Viewport Rendering?

Do Maya support GPU rendering, or only CPU rendering? I think this will determine what you spend your money on.

GPU Rendering is Supported by using nVidia Gelato, Amaretto & Sorbetto Drivers.

If Viewport Rendering is of importance (Working on the machine) then I'd suggest blowing as much of that 50G's as you can on the best Quattro 3D GPU you can - they go up to R30 000 quite easilly. loads of ram is also important.

if you are talking about final/post rendering, rather spend the money and buy 20 x R2500 PC's, and start your own Rendering Farm, in a Network Setup.

Drives wont help with rendering, cpu is the bottle neck.

Keeper has good advice regarding the render farm, only drawback is that 20 machines uses up a lot of space and generates a lot of heat.

Or you can buy the dual Quad core Xeon's, 16GB Ram, Raptor drives (Raid) and a GTX280 and soft mod (Use Quadro Drivers) it to a Quadro :)
I would do that.

I had the same hassle with 3ds Max final rendering, so now all my workstations have a minimum of an E6600 (3 gig ram) and 4 Quads for my render farm. Others can all join in and netrender if needed but generally the Quads with 8gig ram each do pretty well :)

Interesting. Haven't even gotten to storage yet. :) Like what you thinking!

Raptors would be a waste of money because fast hard drives don't help with rendering speed. Rather spend that money on processing power and ram.

Nooooo....

a GTX280 is for games man, Quadro drivers aint gonna do jack!

Ive tried rendering in 3Dsmax with nVidia's Amaretto Drivers and it is specifically supported on Quadro Cards only.

Also, Raptors would be a waste of money, you need loads of money to pay for the Quadro's!

So, like I asked before, Final Rendering or Realtime/Viewport Rendering???

Then buy a lot of mid-range PC's and upgrade them with RAM (Cause ram's cheap...)

Don't waste your money on one or two OVERPRICED Lightning PC's, rather get many, many cases (remember, with no screens) and network them all.

Think of it this way, one HUGE ass guy might be strong to pick up a Car, barely, but with 20-30 Smaller Oaks it will be peanuts - same with rendering.

Remeber, the newer technology is always waaaaaay overpriced for what it's really worth, so you don't get the power of 20 PC's if you spend it all in one Single-PC-Super-setup...

Also a thing to remember - will you be able to have enough power to run 20 PC's? average house, I don't think so....

so maby get like 10 R5000 PC's - that should work good too...(Don't forget the RAM!!!)
