Is there anything in the CPA act which says specials should be advertised a certain amount of time before it comes out or that they must tell their customers about it before purchasing the said item going on special the next week.

My mom had her eye test few days before the end of June and decided on pair of glasses before the start of July. Well she only paid for them today when they called her in and found it there was a special which started on the 1 July not too long after she went in, so shouldnt they have warned her beforehand about the special?.

She could have saved quite a bit of money to use on necessities and I know other companies usually advertise well before the actual special comes.

I'm not sure but usually the ads come out on the day and run for the duration. Some sales people let you know but I don't think there's a law.

No. Unless they feel like doing her a favour, there is nothing to do but pay the full price.

Nope, nothing of the sort. It is pretty crap though, it's happened to me a few times.
The only rules about specials is that a)you have to have stock at the start of the special and b)something about the price and accuracy of the product.

Quite often the people in the shop don't know about it beforehand either. Also advertising on or only a couple of days before a sale is quite commonplace.

Is that the one with a free frame up to the value of R2000? I think it's for the whole month of July. I'm actually going there this week for goggles. Gatvol of these contact lenses

Yes that was the special, but still dont get how most places can advertise their stuff weeks before the specials come yet SpecSavers is the only one that I have seen which doesnt :p.

Surely it takes them a month to decide on the special and then to post the boards to every SpecSavers branch so surely they would have the special board beforehand in the shops backroom.

I know Reggies, Hills etc. actually have the special boards in their storeroom 2-4 weeks before the special starts since I know the owners/workers for them.

Wish there was something in the CPA act to stop them from making a quick buck instead of informing customers of the specials even Vodacon informed us of their special coming out in June and said we should wait than upgrade now (May).

In this case I think they wanna counter low sales in the month of June because people will hold back. Simple business decision. Remember they're in it for the moola, not for your benefit.

If they were worried about that they could have limited the special to the first 5-20 people like other companies do then they catch others also unless they dont like the high influx of people :D.

I don't know that most places do, and sales are something handled by management higher than store level, so it isn't necessarily the case that staff know. But even if they do they are almost certainly not allowed to disclose upcoming sales information to anyone outside the store.

Maybe they're sealed, with orders not to open them. Regardless, if I was running a shop I wouldn't want my staff disclosing our trading plans.

Have you taken the trouble to calmly discuss the matter with the store manager?

But then you might complain that it's not fair that you're number 6.

I understand the frustration when something goes on sale after you've already bought it.

Well least I can be satisfied that I was informed but you will always get someone who complains same with the Game hardrive specials.

But for specs they arent really that busy compared to other shops so I would think 5-10 people would be ample amount.
The point would be to bring in some additional business. But if they give one day leeway, then why not two? It hardly seems fair that someone coming in on the 30th is warned that a sale is about to start, but not someone who is there on the 29th.

Well she only bought/ordered in July, but because her eye test was done at the end of June they wouldn't give it.

She only looked at the different glasses before July so technically she should have gotten the special.

Its not like she bought lets say a hardrive in June then suddenly asked to be refunded in July cause of a special :p.

I also got a new pair in June, then this special came along so decided to get a new pair for the GF.
Go in.. see a frame for 2150.. ask if we can pay the difference.. they say sure. So we plan a date for test, do the test and everything and then when we choose the frame they tell us we can only choose from a preselected range. Idiots, and when I went to fetch my glasses they would not give them to me because the optometrist wasn't there, they could of told me this before saying it was ok for me to fetch them on a sunday.

Looks like others have also complained that the silver range wasn't included in the special cause of some headoffice thing.

They promised them free frames cause of that on hellopeter so you should complain there.

Hate the freaking pricing they add though.

Was told by someone I know that makes the lenses what the actual cost price is for a pair of glasses.

You pay R4.5K, it costs them around R500 to make.

Was that with medical aid or without since that is a crazy markup?

That is what you pay, cash.

The frames they sell for R800+ they usually get for R150 to R250 (there are exceptions).

The uncut lenses cost them about R50 to R150 ea (excl multi-focal).

Probably be better to buy your own frames somewhere else then for cheap or online and then get them fitted by them
