Speed cameras - When they're illegal

I love Average Speed Over Distance stuff... its beyond most people to comprehend, so watching them slow to the speed limit for each camera and then race like a bat out of hell between them is funny.... Then watching the explosive rants on the local Faceboob group about all the fines they've received....

I regularly drive between Cape Town and Beaufort West on the N1 which is almost completely covered by average speed cameras and it is very funny to watch people slowing down when they go under the gantries and then speed up again. Clearly they don't understand how it works.

never seen one of those, are they even legal here?

There's plenty of sections of N3 between JHB and Durban with them as well.

That's good to hear. The longest stretch in the country must be the section on the N1 between Worcester and Three Sisters just past Beaufort West, some 430km's.

Speed cameras - When they're illegal

South African motorists are regularly caught out by speed cameras on major roads, whether they are fixed, visible cameras, or the camouflaged, hidden speed traps being deployed around the country.

Many drivers may feel slighted by the lack of disclosure regarding speed cameras and the tactic of concealing traps behind larger objects or disguising them as other installations.
Comments:- I agree that there are many proctologists out there who love sitting on my arse because i am driving within the speed limits. I think speed cameras are out dated and Average Speed over Distance should be implemented and in Gauteng where they have E Toll am sure it would only require a simple upgrade Also the Traffic cops should have calibrated speedometers and cameras within the car that can do number plate recognition and traffic officers be trained in using VASCAR In addition traffic police should be able to ascertain whether the vehicle is insured or not Last but not least there should be ONE traffic department for each province and these traffic officers should be trained to advanced driving standards but it will never happen so lets just muddle along with what stupid new speed limits they bring in to make more money

I agree.. i keep to the limit. But then why do they change the fcking speed limit at woodmead from 120 to 90 (or something). That is just insane... (and I got a ticket one evening, because I was going home doing 120 (in 120 zone) and they all of sudden 100 or something)
FYI beware of going on the N1 and going through Colesburg !!!!!

I don't think normal speed cameras work as people eventually figure them out and then slow down for the camera and speed up again.

The best way to do it is average speed over distance. Unless if there is a stop along the way, you cannot get around them.

A speed camera ever 2km would be great if government didn't pocket all the tax payers money.. It would just kill motorists fuel economy if they'd speed up and slow down more often, and would have to fill up their tanks more often.

The one up Fields Hill in Durban is awesome...

Whose fault is that, you should be at the speed limit anyway.

Or they could be intelligent at drive at the speed limit and not pay fines.

Not everyone drives 10 under speed limit.. The way it really should be. Which is why a speed trap every 2km would be great.. Also all 120km zones should be dropped to 100
Why should we drive 10 under the limit? That makes no sense.

Or drive at whatever speed and still not pay fines. Aarto fines are like etoll statements. It is simply the government wasting taxpayers money on useless pieces of paper.

You only need to pay the fine if the trafic cop actually stop you and hands you the hand written fine that includes a summons, and even then I suggest waiting for the warrant of arrest, many times in the past the good traffic officers that has stopped me has either forgotten to hand in their paperwork and the fine never got onto the system and from time to time they write off outstanding fines. I can't even remember when last I really had to pay one.

The avarerge speed nonsense and all the illegal camera directly after the speed change on the hiway to Durban is even more ridiculous. 140-160 all the way and smile and wave for the photo.
