Speed cameras - When they're illegal

Probably caught just after the Engen One Stops.

So you weren't driving over 130km/h real speed (probably over 140km/h indicated)?

As far as I know the only way to find out is to take your case to court and then ask the prosecution to produce all the evidence that the speed trap was legal. E.g. the calibration certificates, the qualifications of the person operating the device, etc. Remember the burden of proof is on them to prove that device was operated correctly and that all the required procedures, permissions, certificates and calibrations were in place on the day they were operating the trap. You might get lucky and they can't produce any of that and then your case gets chucked out of court. You might get unlucky and they have all their ducks in a row and you get the book thrown at you and you land up with a criminal record for something that would only have been a civil matter if you just paid the fine.

The easiest way is not to pay it until they try and legally make you pay. Wait for a propper summons.

Yes.
Think I will just wait for a summons.
In the meantime will write them a sorry letter to get the fines reduced.

Yeah so you don't get the summons because the post office is fooked and the Sheriff is too fat to leave his seat then one evening minding your own business you go into a roadblock and straight to jail, brilliant idea.

You can still pay at the road block. Carry your credit card with you.
 
Anyone know if there is an email address to which I can address an apology letter to, in order to get my fines reduced?

The best way to do it is average speed over distance. Unless if there is a stop along the way, you cannot get around them.

You do realise that that is the primary purpose of speed cameras right; to make people slow down in more dangerous areas to reduce occurrences of accidents and not to make a profit.

I also thought this when I first arrived. It's area dependant and usually when people visit or first move to Aus they stay and frequent areas closer to the cities which means more police, more speed cameras and more congestion so they get a narrow perspective. Yes they are better at merging etc as this is common place everywhere but now that I have moved about 1 hour from the city I feel like I live and drive amongst the swampies from the Eastrand. There is little policing and lots of traffic accidents and no speed cameras to speak of. Most people around here are generally doing 100-120km/h in the 80 zones. Also when you frequent the highways more often you'll start noticing most people generally do the 10km over the speed limit thing too. When I was taking the Eastlink to work it was not uncommon for many people to be doing 120-130km/h and it's also a 100km/h zone.

Almost everyone who is aiming for the limit drives below the speed limit, because they're using their car's speedometer to determine their current speed.

There's no value in dropping the speed limit to 100kph.

That's really funny because the Australians I know complain about how bad most of the drivers are. Not indicating, driving too slowly and definitely a lack of respect.

A lot of South Africans drive really slowly. In fact it's more common than speeding.
 
We'll you can safely just ignore the useless piece of paper you get in the mail. So therefore no speed cameras really matter.
Just smile and wave for the photo.

No I didn't because it's an obvious reality that they can't put millions of cameras everywhere. Cameras are positioned at (or at least should be as per their purpose) the points where getting people to slow down will have a greater impact in stopping accidents.

An example: If there is a bend in the road where people usually speed, overshoot and either take out other cars or themselves then having a camera there will encourage people to slow down, meaning they no longer overshoot and take cars out or kill themselves. Yes, the people will speed up right after but the frequencies of dangerous incidents has been reduced. To think the sole purpose of cameras is to get people to slow down across the board is just ignorant.
