speed test this morning

Speed was 80K~90K this morning @ 6am. Now down to <29K again. :(

I connect to the Northcliff tower and live in Weltevredenpark. I have NOT reached my cap yet and my speed this morning is as follw:Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

* Download time: 46.063 seconds
* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 88.6 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 10.9 (kiloBytes/second)
I also have problems to stay connected in irc, I was told that my frame error rate was too high 0-55%. WBS said to me nothing can be done to decrease my error rate.
Have I reached the end of the road with I-Burst??

getting lots of packet loss myself this morning. Last night it was fine (playing until about midnight), but this morning its terrible.
Ping is fine (~120 to SAIX).
Wonder if the rain has anything to do with it :(

Since 06h00 my connect on the Nortcliff Tower keep on dropping me about every 30 sec. I've phoned the helpdesk and the only answer I could get is that from their side everything is fine.

Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

Download time: 110.539 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 36.9 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 4.5 (kiloBytes/second)

2005-04-16 07:53:59 EST: 8 / 45
Your download speed : 8832 bps, or 8 kbps.
A 1 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed is much faster than down.. have you tweaked?
Your upload speed : 46691 bps, or 45 kbps.

* Download time: 22.573 seconds
* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 180.7 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 22.2 (kiloBytes/second)

:mad:

well after speaking to helpdesk today (many times) who I presumed were relaying messages to Luis (so they say) nothing much has changed my side... still getting substandard dialup type speeds and with a blue sky and setting sun i very much doubt it is related to the wet weather of late.

(laughing at the idea of wbs technicians blow drying antenna's all around JHB :D)

The last two days I’ve had connection problems as well. my download speed drops to a standstill, and when i try to reconnect the connection times out, sometimes resetting the UTD's power solves this other times half an hours wait. This is strange as my upstream data seems to be fine. :confused:

packet loss has gotten worse all day..now it's about 10x what it was in my last post :(
rain has stop long ago...so it wasn't that. maybe something happened on the tower.
check and i am not capped either

I've checked specifically for the effect of rain a couple of times in past when I still had good speed and couldn't determine any serious detrimental effect due to rain. Actually did speed tests during a heavy thunder storm too.

i see the noticeboard (http://www.iburst.co.za/networkstatus2.php) has a note about scheduled work being done last night at around midnight...i wonder if this is the cause?

That work was done the night before (Thursday going on Friday) When the network came back on, all seemed fine. But clearly something has changed. And yes it does seem to coincide with that "maintenance".

F0cking liars

I phoned IBurst to enquire about the speed problem, spoke to Tsepo:
Me: What is the issue with speed problem?
Tsepo: Which tower are you connecting to?
Me: Centurion
Tsepo: Centurion? That tower are giving no problems, been running smoothly.
Me: Are there no speed problems
Tsepo: No sir
Me: Don't talk **** to me, I read the mybroadband forum, I know there have been problems, are you saying there is no problem.
Tsepo: Yes sir we are experiencing speed problem.
Me: What are you doing about it?
Tsepo: we got another 15 Meg from IS
Me: but it is not helping anything, what are you going to do to solve this.
Tsepo: I will phone techinician.

Later phones me back:
The technician says there is some problem with Centurion and he will work on it.

I have to test after 5:30 (that is after he knocked off)
OK, I test now and this is my result (telkom local internet test)

Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

Download time: 24.725 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 165 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 20.2 (kiloBytes/second)

ftp test @telkom => 11 kiloBytes/second.

Telkom/ UUNET could have an effect on international bandwidth but local? WTF is going on in this place? It seems like some kind of mafia, Telkom works everyone over (or so we think) but IBurst won't say so, UUNET won't say so?

I think it is time for SA Internet community (excluding Telkom) to seriously consider the launch of a satalite for comms.

gimli sounds exactly like my freaking day. first he told me that uunet is experiencing problems. i then informed him that uunet resolved those problems at 8:30am this morning. he also 'phoned' a technician for me.

helpdesk? i think not. i think wbs are going to be seriously bitch slapped by ibursters on monday morning. hope they are ready.

Yes I saw, but their issues are more like you would expect, one hour, two hours, maybe half a day, but constant sh1tty speeds, what is it, like four weeks now? That is not an IT problem, that is a lack of bandwidth or as everyone seems to think, a cr@p traffic shaping system.

Is there any explanation to these question:

1. Why did iBurst get more bandwidth from IS and still keep Uunet
2. Why cant they admit the problems [not from the helpdesk point of view for it seams they [helpdesk] they dont have much say or info for that matter.
3. Who is really lying, the helpdesk agents/management/network technicians

Local....
* Download time: 30.797 seconds
* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 132.5 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 16.2 (kiloBytes/second)

International:
Your download speed : 53915 bps, or 52 kbps.
A 6.5 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 35334 bps, or 34 kbps.

I understand the latency issue, but there was a time when even with the latency of wireless, the international speeds were not this bad. I am currently downloading a large file from Microsoft (which i get over 50KB on ADSL) at 7KB / 56kb. Yay dialup.

It is no better today than it was last week. Took the weekend off, so wasnt really paying much attention, but in 30 minutes this morning, VPN / ssh sessions have been disconnected 4 times.

I see Ares and Andre1 are also having problems, and are also on the Northcliff tower (as am I). I have full signal and am covered, using desktop unit with 5 lights. Seems like problems on this tower. Unfortunately, i wasnt able to test outside of business hours, but i get my sentech unit back today *bounce bounce*. Will be getting feedback from my client though as to how his iburst is working. (he will probably be using the bryanston tower)
